Known by Our Attitude Toward Jesus

This feast was celebrated in October. Six entire months had elapsed between this and the preceding chapter. During the Feast of Tabernacles the people dwelt in tents made of boughs, on the roofs of the houses, and in the open places in or around Jerusalem. The rites of the feast recalled the miraculous interpositions of the Exodus. Water was poured forth each morning in the Temple to recall the smiting of the rock. Two candelabra, lighted each evening, represented the luminous cloud which lighted the Israelites by night. The brethren of Jesus are named in Matthew 13:55, of whom James afterward became chief pastor of the Jerusalem church.

They could not deny His miracles; could not understand why he did not lead the popular movement that was ready to follow; and urged that he should at least give the authorities at the capital an opportunity of examining His claims. They felt that things had reached a point where there ought to be no standing still. Jesus could not explain the reasons that actuated Him. He knew that His open challenge to Jerusalem would mean His death; but there was yet further work to be done before His time should come. Let us use our time according to the divine plan.

How to Know the Truth of Jesus' Word

Jesus now went up to the feast, not because he was prompted by the worldly policy suggested by His brethren, but because He was led by His Fathers will. We must be on our guard against unspiritual advisers, and must wait till the hour and the minute-hands of the clock have reached the precise moment of the Fathers appointment.

Here is an easy method of ascertaining whether our Lords words about God, Himself, and the future are merely the words of a human teacher, or are really Gods. Be willing to do as He says! Stand prepared to fulfil whatever is revealed to your mind and witnessed to by the inner voice! Live with your face toward the dawn, for though it tarry long it will certainly break. See John 3:21. Faith in the gospel does not come by logic, but as the result of obeying the highest truth that you know.

Follow on and your path will lead you out to where Jesus stands, the revealed Son of God and the Saviour of men. The old quarrel as to the miracle wrought at Bethesda on the Sabbath was still alive, John 7:22-23. His critics did not hold that the Mosaic law was violated if a childs submission to the Jewish initiatory rite was performed on the Sabbath. How foolish, then, to blame Jesus for an act of mercy and healing!

Help in the Hour of Need

Matthew 14:22-36

Jesus always comes in the storm. It had been a great relief to escape from the pressure of the crowd to His place of prayer, on heights swept by the evening breeze and lighted by the holy stars.

But He tore Himself away because His friends needed Him. He is watching you also in the storm and will certainly come to your help.

He uses the element we dread as the path for His approach. The waves were endangering the boat, but Jesus walked on them.

In our lives are people and circumstances we dread, but it is through these that the greatest blessing of our lives will come, if we look through them to Christ.

His coming is sometimes delayed.

The gray dawn was already beginning to spread over the scene. The disciples' strength was spent.

He was not too late to be of service, but just in time to save them from despair. Be of good cheer, and if Jesus bids you come to Him on the water, always believe that His commands are enabling.

Keep looking to Him, not at the storm.

Contend Earnestly for the Faith

Kept is the keynote of this Epistle. It occurs in Jude 1:1; Jude 1:6; Jude 1:21, and in another form in Jude 1:24. Many evil doctrines and practices were intruding into the Church. Certain persons had crept in, who quoted the mercy of God as an excuse for immorality and practically disowned the teachings of the Lord Jesus.

In contrast with these were the disciples whom Jude addresses and who owned the Lord Jesus as their beloved Despot,(the Greek for Master, Jude 1:4, r.v.) They were kept for him, as the others were kept in chains. Let us also keep ourselves in the love of God, Jude 1:21. It is much easier to live consistently in hours of storm than in hours of ease.

Let us be warned against drifting back from our first faith. Let us take heed from the fate of fallen angels, of Sodom and Gomorrah, of Cain and Balaam, of Korah and others.

Let us watch and pray and earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints, Jude 1:3, bearing it through the world as the pilgrim host bore the sacred vessels in the days of Ezra. See Ezra 8:28.
