A couple of musicians that were deemed unfashionable laughed a lot during the 90's. Michael Cretu, for instance, is a case of the sort. While I admit I am not really sure his reputation was terrible during the 80's – he had a solo career and some solid producing gigs –, he probably didn't think Enigma would define his consequent opus. Then again, there is a strange alchemy at work in here. You cannot be sure how serious he and his collaborators are in the whole enterprise. MCMXC a.D. always seems to hover over the edge of collapse, yet Cretu achieved the tough balance such a project needs. Moreover, he captured the laissez-faire vibe of the 90's, because the record feels both postmodern and classical, though don't the people on the LP, if that's what they intended to achieve.
