F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #34
The General Electric F110-GE-400 engine replaced the troubled Pratt & Whitney TF30 in the F-14B and F-14D variants, but it has issues of its own. In 1996, two Tomcats that crashed as a result of afterburner failure, the later of which exploded after the pilot lit the afterburner, resulting in damage to the afterburner can’s lining. The US Navy prohibited use of the afterburner below 10,000 ft until General Electric redesigned the afterburner. It took over a year to remedy.
