"George Russell always makes bad strategy calls"

George calling ART to undercut Nyck De Vries after losing his pole lead due to a slow start. This results in him taking the lead back, winning the race by 3.3s. He won the F2 Championship that day, 68 pts clear.

George Russell almost falls over podium fence

F2 feature race, Paul Ricard, June 2018

George led start to finish in treacherous mixed conditions. He was coming off a double DNF the previous race weekend in Monaco.

This race weekend set him up for an excellent run of results to the end of the season, leading to him winning the F2 championship in his rookie year.

I had to watch this a bunch of times to clip it and the part where George almost goes backwards over the fence stresses me out every. single. time.

Fun fact 1: that is in fact Roberto Merhi (aka Teto, member of Carlos's Team 55) in P3 on the podium. He had been kicking around in various F3 and GP3 series prior to his 2015 debut for a single season in F1 for Manor Marussia, a team that barely limped through the year due to its disastrous financial situation. Unusually for a former F1 driver, he then raced in F2: 10 races for two different teams in 2017, and 20 races for two other different teams in 2018. His most recent F2 stint was six races in 2022.

Fun fact 2: Teto subsequently lost this P3 result – he was disqualified for a tyre pressure infringement.

Where's Poochy Alex? He qualified P2 and was running in P3 for most of the race but had a devastating engine failure. He limped back to the pits, got his mechanics to try to fix the problem, went out again ... immediately had another engine failure. It took him a long time to admit defeat and the broadcast kept cutting back to Alex sitting in the partially disassembled car while his mechanics swarmed over it. The commentators kept remarking on his professionalism, tenacity and maturity.

🏁 Interview with George, P2 🏁 [George feigns confusion] 'Home crowd for Alex?' [makes eye contact with Alex off-camera, laughs] 'I thought, no, yeah— home crowd for us both.' 🏁 'Great for us, loads of fans here – not sure if they were supporting for us or the football at the time, but nevertheless, it's a great atmosphere here at Silverstone.'

NOTE: the England–Sweden 2018 World Cup quarter final was being played during this race. England won 2–0.
