Playing Munchkin
me: I'm vetoing that so hard it's Danny Devito.
Mix: But he's so small though.
Mork: Yeah, so go back a few levels.

I made Mix laugh unto gasping with man door hand hook car door.
He fucked up saying the name of the restaurant I’d brought takeout for everyone from (Wednesday is game night! Sunday is also [sometimes] game night!) by just totally mixing up the order of the nouns. I started giggling, and then said “man hook car door” and started wheezing because I couldn’t get it out and it was so funny. Mork was in the other room yelling WHAT? and I could barely speak to ask Mix if he’d even heard of the meme. He hadn’t, so at about the time Mork walked back into the room I’d called up the screenshot and given it to Mix, and he did a dramatic sightreading, and he made it through but as soon as he hit the last word he leaned back and guffawed.
He said it was just as good as I’d said it would be.
We both laughed for at least a minute after that, and I couldn’t even get out the words to tell Mork, between me gasping for air and Mix giggling in a rapid-fire way I hadn’t seen before, what the lead-in had been, because we knew it was funnier with the setup.
So I’m proud of myself. And it’s been a while since I’ve laughed so hard I’ve cried.
it's on the tip of my tongue
Mix: "There's this other band, called... hold on."
Mork: "Oh, that's an interesting name."
Mix: "No, they're-- wait."
Mork: "So's that! Is that a real band?"
me: "Yes, they're both part of a supergroup called Shut the Fuck Up, [Mork]."
A: "There's always CSI: Cyber!"
Mic: "Not that. That's my one veto."
Mix: ((cocks head, mildly:)) "Executive Order. Bitch."
Mic?: "Your power is constitutionally limited."
saw Mad Max. It might be the best action movie I’ve seen for a long time but I’ll have to think. Mork and I looked at each other as the lights came up in the theatre and said “Wow.” Mork doesn’t like much. But it’s so visually easy to follow, and a sustained excitement, and we both came out of it kind of pumped.
ate gyros from local weird favorite where the floor is always wet-slippery and the TV on the back wall is always playing Everybody Loves Raymond. The fries are awesome when they’re steaming hot and when they’re room-temperature, and they’re “why am I eating this” in between.
rehashed Black Hat, because we were still kind of baffled by it (and, well, since MMFR was also two hours long and an action movie and visually coherent [stunning!] there was no way a comparison wasn’t going to come up). Mix read out reviews from his phone, Mork threw stubby fries at my basket while he thought I wasn’t looking.
had an unresolvable argument about framing and shooting choices and making the viewer complicit in (or, a sort of automatic sympathetic to) badness. Discussion, no raised voices or real irritation, though I still think I’m bad at arguing because I get emotionally distracted. This time I held onto the thread well, didn’t get distracted into a moving-target argument, either, and was able to recognize where we were going in circles.
dog! dog dog dog dog who’s a dog, you are, do you have a face yes you do
witnessed Mix and Mork watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine for the first time, after I recced it. They were delighted. I see their fond-derisive banter in it and I think they did, too.
watched What We Do in the Shadows, which I thought was a series but is just a movie. It’s pretty good. Some fantastic jokes that I hadn’t yet seen giffed, so.
wondered, on my drive back home, whether if I saw my people more often I would find it easier to get things done.
put Bloc Party’s album Intimacy on again and remembered that/why I loved it. There’s one song that’s got a perfect road trip mood guitar pattern, and it always feels just exactly right flying along at night with the press and lean of going through a turn, and the hiss of tires on wet black pavement, and the soft rebounding glow of traffic lights against the poles and the walls and the clouds, or the undulating gold-blur of crop fields and low hills flowing east in late-afternoon sunlight. There’s another that feels like faith-frustration-hope-resignation-hunger, like grappling with something without being able to sense its edges. Maybe I spent so long listening to that album on repeat that it’s worn grooves into my brain, that it’s much more sense-memory than synaesthetic.
felt (feel) run-down, grit-eyed, and upwellingly sad for no reason, and it's not going anywhere, so I’m going to bed. (ahaha, that logic: i can't be sad if I'm unconscious so take that, whatever's making me feel like this!)
IT MY BIRTHDAY
I am sick. I am a snot factory.
Joywave’s new album How Do You Feel Now? just dropped on Spotify, a week earlier than its real release, and I AM HAPPY. Oh my gosh. Four of the songs were on last year’s EP and I love all of them, and the new stuff is pretty great. (sometimes they sound like Final Straw-era Snow Patrol, sometimes like Set Yourself On Fire-era Stars, so 2004-era gravy is like yes yes yes yes THIS) This is the band that Big Data featured on “Dangerous” and who were in heavy play on Sirius’ Alt FM with the hella catchy earworm “Tongues” with KOPPS. Their album sounds more like the latter than the former.
TAUK is excellent live. Holy cow. They really get into their music; it’s so fun to watch them play. I got to talk to the bassist and the keyboardist after their set when I saw them and they were super cool even though I was painfully awkward at them.
This post brought to you by Mix’s taste in music -- we first bonded over our mutual simultaneous love of Minus the Bear and intense dislike of the discord outro on “Heaven Is a Ghost Town” -- because without him I would not have heard of either of those two bands.
What even is going on with my degree/program? I don’t know! Neither does Field! Everything is crazy right now and we’re both scrambling! Is shit falling apart permanently or just temporarily? Who knows? When the dust settles, who will still be standing? When does the earthquake even stop? ((throws hands in air))
So, asking Music Friend to watch the TSwift/NIN mashup backfired spectacularly, because he hadn’t heard either song.

Equal parts UGH and YAY -- massive, half-conversational life update
This post is actually a shit-sandwich! Just, things in the order in which I remember them, I guess.
