Since I started sewing again in 2018 I have made a lot of silly mistakes. I was brand new to the world of on-line fabric shopping, didn't know what to look at, how to read product description. But I have learned a lot from my mistakes and now I’m ready to share the wisdom! What to look at, what to read between the lines and how to make an online purchase that wouldn’t be disappointing! Let’s go! 1. You don’t know what fabric you are buying There are so many different names of fabrics that it can be overwhelming, especially if you are new to the whole sewing business. When not sure what the name means, go out to the nearest sewing shop, touch all the fabrics, feel the quality, write the names and your notes down and next time you order online, you’ll be on it! 2. You order wrong colour If you are super sensitive and picky and you want exactly that shade of green, buying online might not be the best choice. But if you are more relaxed and can do with a slightly different shade, just look out for colour descriptions: if it says NEON next to it, it will be neon even if the picture looks like normal yellow. 3. The fabric is very narrow As I keep saying in my courses, usually the fabrics come in more or less standard width: around ~150 cm. But this is not an unwritten rule, different suppliers have different measurements, To avoid disappointment, always read the width information. If you can’t find one, just message the seller. 4. You buy not enough material I don’t have a rule in place on how much I should order, I usually just trust my intuition and previous experience. What you can do, you can prepare your pattern and measure roughly how much fabric you will need. If it comes, for example, to 2,5 metres, order 3. ——————- And I have run out of space!
