While we do not know the story of this particular man, we do know that the supreme court has virtually awarded police officers "a license" to discriminate on the basis of race, provided that they can concoct another "factor" for stopping someone. Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow illuminates how unjust and racially biased our criminal justice system is, locking disproportionate numbers of African American males into a permanent undercaste. The striking parallels between the Jim Crow system and mass incarceration are numerous. Explicit racism has been replaced with implicit racism and stigmatization of criminals, and "criminal" has become synonymous with "African American male," when in fact, the percentages of African American people and White people who commit crimes are very similar. The war on drugs and tough on crime policies were created in the 1980s (when crime rates were stagnant) during racist presidential campaigns and administrations in order to gain the Southern vote, and have sadly left the lasting impression that African Americans are criminals. We need a movement to change this injustice.

I am seriously disturbed by some of the things that got said as comments to this photo. We are living in a time that's seriously in need of change.
