Confessions of a Facebook (sort of) Insider
Facebook. The behemoth of social networks. Insidiously creeping into our every day lives from every angle now. Bosses require you have a Facebook account - so they can spy on you and judge you from the piety of their monitors. Websites beg you to use Facebook to log into their sites - so they can tailor ads based on your browsing habits.
But, despite the fact that we all use Facebook, not many of us are actually very happy with Big F. Changes, glitches, the inability to ever contact a real person when something goes wrong - all of this chips away at the overall “User Experience”.
When someone encounters a problem with their Profile, Page or Group, the only recourse they have is to head on over to the Facebook Help Community. The problem here is that while there is an official “Facebook Help Team” presence, they are few and far between. To make matters worse, these Team Members aren’t actually a dedicated presence, but rather a handful of people from within Facebook who try to roam the Help Community forum when their other official tasks allow them a few moments to do so.
Facebook has recently revamped a program they tried out a couple of years ago with less than stellar results. The previous incarnation of the Volunteer Help “army” consisted of a system that created a competitive atmosphere, so the whole thing devolved into a big ego-stroking contest between a few individuals. So, this system was eventually discarded.
Fast forward to more recent months, where they now have the two-tiered “Stars” system: “Rising Stars” and “Star Contributors”. Rather than having a “Leaderboard” or “Top Contributors” like the previous failed experiment did, the system works by rewarding people who dedicate their time and efforts in learning the ins and outs of various Facebook subjects and then volunteer their time to answer other people’s problems with a Star designation.
Rising Stars are those people who show promise, dedication to the forum and can demonstrate that they know their stuff. It’s not a perfect measuring system -sometimes, people who probably shouldn’t be giving out advice slip through this first “filtering” step and become a “Rising Star”, but that’s okay because the next step -becoming a full Star Contributor- involves more dedication and accuracy, as well as a certain level of diplomacy and humor.
Now, it must be remembered that these people are not Facebook Employees. They do not get any compensation for their time and efforts. Something else to bear in mind is that not every Facebook policy is revealed to these volunteers. Which leads me to my next point.
If you wake up one day and try to log into your account, only to find you’ve been locked out (for reasons other than because Facebook suspects you’re name is fake, and they’re demanding proof of identity), or your Page or Group has mysteriously evaporated into the ether of cyberspace with no warning, rest assured that this was not an arbitrary or even sudden action on Facebook’s part.
Accounts, Pages and Groups are not deleted simply on the complaining reports of a few disgruntled users. If something disappears, it’s because of ongoing problems or violations that the user failed to correct. The exception to the “ongoing problem child” rule is when a Profile, Page or Group violates Facebook’s community standards so hard core that Facebook has no choice but to quickly nuke it from space. Examples would be Pages or Groups set up to glorify illegal activities, hate groups, etc.
Speaking of the Fake Name controversy, several internal Facebook systems are fully automated, and have little or no actual human input until after the fact (if at all). For example, one such program “crawls” the site, sniffing out names that it’s programmed to consider “fake”. Sadly, a lot of legitimate names get caught in this net, particularly Native American names, and other cultural or ethnic names. For some reason, this program has begun running amok in the last couple of months, as if it’s gained semi-sentience and is determined to screw up as many peoples social media lives as possible.
Something else that’s been going on behind the scenes recently is the whole “Verified Page” craze. Everyone who has a Page wants to be “Verified”, and Facebook was literally flooded with Verification Requests from both true legitimate celebrities, all the way to members of garage bands in every Podunk town across the world. And every single person who applied believes that they’re entitled to the official status that Verification brings.
So, about 72 hours ago, as of this little exposé, Facebook has implemented a system that they probably should have gone with from the start, but underestimated the sheer madness that would take hold of virtually every Page Admin everywhere. Now, rather than filling out a form and submitting ID and proof of celeb status, or sports team affiliation or whatever, Facebook is now simply taking this option out of the hands of Page Admins.
Now, a Page will be offered the opportunity to Verify their Page from within the Page Settings -when and if Facebook determines the Page meets some mysterious and unknown standards. Some people on the Help Forum are claiming that it’s “all about the Likes”, but it’s not. Not entirely, at least. In fact, a bigger factor is...location, location, location.
Nasty little secret: While Facebook has some sites around the world, their true base of operations is their sprawling Menlo Park, California campus. What this means is that most of Facebook’s active employees -the ones who can actually “do” things- are American. This means that they tend to be unfamiliar with famous Bollywood stars, or Middle Eastern politicians. Yes, right now, Facebook is giving preference to Pages belonging to famous people in the US, UK and a couple of other more “mainstream” countries.
So, that politician from India may very well have several hundred thousand Likes. The tattoo artist from the Middle East may have half a million Likes. That Page run by the only major news outlet in a small Something-stan country thats been around for years and has been “Liked” by pretty much every single citizen in that country - since no one from the US knows who they are, it’s highly unlikely that they will be “Verified”.
Sad, yes. Discriminatory? Again, yes. Unfortunately, it’s also an unavoidable reality. Facebook does not have the sort of PR employee base they need to properly run this sort of feature. Which is really odd, since sites like Twitter and Tumblr have been able to pull it off. See, Facebook tends to focus it’s hiring efforts on coders -”builders” if you will. Not Public Relations or even Logistics experts. And this flaw is beginning to really show in the Help Forum lately.
No Customer Service. No way to speak to a real person, or even email someone without jumping through a dozen or more hoops. A Help Forum mostly “Staffed” with volunteers who are given little real information on what’s going on behind the scenes. And there are always things going on behind the scenes. For some reason, Facebook has chosen a policy of secrecy rather than letting its users know what’s going on. This is painfully apparent every time Facebook rolls out changes.
When Facebook went down not once but twice in about a weeks time back in September, people speculated everything from a HackAttack from Anonymous to Aliens. No way Facebook would keep people in the dark if it was somehow a Facebook problem, right? Well. It was a Facebook problem. Nothing more than a coding snafu. Seriously. That was it. Twice. A simple “Oops, we done goofed” would have sufficed.
In some ways, it would be fair to say that Facebook has outgrown its ability to govern itself. It relies too heavily on automated policing programs to do the work that should be done by real humans, it has alienated a huge user-base with its crazy and often dangerous “Real Names” policy and it refuses to give its users any real ability to resolve problems. The Help Forum is the early warning system that is showing that the edges are beginning to fray.
And yet, people still flock to the site like moths to a flame.
The Hidden Functions Of Social Networks
The Hidden Functions Of Social Networks

For instance, did you know that you can export a list of contact details for your connections on LinkedIn, including the email address of each one?
And a useful feature on Twitter allows you to mute someone, rather than having to unfollow them.
