Refusing Boko Haram orders to join the militant Islamist group, gunmen shot his father, then his mother in cold blood, before they turned their semi-automatic weapons on him. Showing me the bullet scars on a cold January morning in Milan, Prosper explained how he is not legally allowed to work in Italy until he receives a 'permesso di lavoro' or work permit. Whatever loose coins he gathers from the kindness of the Italian people is pooled with other Nigerian friends in the city to cook a communal meal at the day's end. Prosper's ultimate dream is to work, live in a secure environment and contribute to society.
