Gosh, this delicious vegetarian lamb stew sure tastes like lamb. #justjoshin #failedvegetarian #homemeal #lambstew #thankscharles (at Pasadena, California)
no longer vegetarian...
So the purpose of this blog was to track my progress of being vegetarian. As can be seen by the date of my last entry as compared to this one, I have not posted in awhile. If you're super observant, you may have also noticed I've changed the explanation at the top of my page to say "meat eater who wants to eat as vegetarian as possible" or whatnot. I ate meat. After only just over 2 months, I reached a point of unhappiness with what I was doing. I remember the moment as clear as when it happened - I was on vacation in the Napa Valley with my parents and I had selected this vegetable sandwich with hummus on it for lunch. My mom (always a meat eater) had ordered a fresh sliced turkey sandwich with brie cheese made on bread with dried cranberries embedded within it. Long story, short, my sandwich was far from satisfying and my mom's looked so good. It was during this lunch that I was also visiting with my friend who just graduated the Napa Valley campus of CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and was talking about all of her fabulous cooking classes in which she learned about and how to cook food I have only dreamed of. Being a devout (self-proclaimed) foodie and hospitality student, I realized that food is what makes me happy. If I'm not happy with what I'm eating, I've never seen the need to eat it. So I promptly dropped my increasingly dull vegetable sandwich and asked my mom if I could finish the few remaining bites of her turkey sandwich. So on this fine day, in the middle of March 2013, I ate meat after not eating it for 2 months.
This may not seem like a huge accomplishment, nor a dramatic disappointment; but in that moment, I made a decision that set off a chain reaction that again is changing who I am as a person - causing me to question who I thought I had become, and sending me in another direction to form a new form of myself. So I have decided to repurpose this blog. Instead of tracking my vegetarian journey, I will instead talk about my confusion after giving up meat and then wanting to eat it again, what I've done since then that has continued to changed my views on food and environmentalism, what made me decide to resign from the presidency of the environmental club on my university's campus after thinking it was such a major part of my identity, and how I hope to again grab hold of the passion to protect the environment, live as green as I can, but ultimately to be as happy as I can.
