Week 3 – 17/10/17
Week 3 is my eureka moment. I’m being thrusted into new scenarios that are challenging my ability to get things done in a super short amount of time. This is both a mental and physical challenge. Yes physical because it is draining, I have stayed well passed working hours to get tasks done and have woken early to get a head start. I see how much I really want this and I’m growing because of it, organisation really is key. This week especially I’ve been frustrated that I can’t get my vision across, I have been feeling pressure to do GREAT work and I have been hard on myself when things don’t go accordingly- but this week has been about typography and Wiedenisms (slogans that Wieden and Kennedy live by) and in the name of wiedenisms iv decided to not be too hard on myself and ‘embrace failure.’ The workshops have been amazing, I’m very appreciative of them, my favourite so far is the humans after all by Paul, he managed to somehow very beautifully humanise type and made me look at type in a whole new way, questions like is this typography representative of the message being shared come to mind now when looking at type now. This passed week has really helped me see the importance of everyday typography as well as the impact type can have. Another conversation with KJ (Karen Jane) further helped enhance my view of type- she explained that good design is seamless and you’re not supposed to question the thing that helps deliver the message. Road signs and logos for example. Earlier on in the week we had a workshop that explained this- we got to speak about what good design is as well as attuning our eyes to what it is we personally like about design. So kudos Wieden and Kennedy for setting up these workshops. W+K has helping me think about every element of creativity- I came in with questions like: how do I make my work more professional, what does a great idea look like? But I need to enjoy he process more, especially learning from the people who work around me. You can’t do everything by yourself and this is such a great opportunity to pick the minds of people who have created amazing work. W+K is by far better than anywhere I ever worked in my whole 22 years of breathing. They really give you independence with how you choose to do your work and how you manage your time. It’s a partnership, they’re very flexible with your preference at working and I think that amongst other things yields the great work that W+K is known for, because everybody wants to be here.
