As an individual, I make a little below the median income for Illinois (although I make somewhere around the median **household** income for the city of Chicago and well below median **household** income for my zip code. If you want to talk average incomes I'm below those too!).
Both me, and a person making TWICE my income will see a reduction in their personal income tax if Illinois voters pass the fair tax amendment. A person making FIVE times my income will see a $600 increase in their personal income taxes.

I like to pay taxes--with them, I buy civilization. But Illinois' flat tax is stupid. It's unfair and it leaves important tax revenues untouched.
I know people hate to think about income taxes. And I know people love to hate income taxes. And I am personally very angry about the things my income taxes fund, instead of the things they could be funding. But income tax should be assessed in graduated brackets, with higher rates at higher incomes, to better align one's tax burden with one's income.
