"NO!!"
River’s last thought as she triggered the bomb, was that she was glad she’d been here. She was glad Amy had persuaded her to come on this one extra trip with them. Because if she wasn’t here, Amy would be the one pressing the button to end it all, and that just couldn’t happen.
It couldn’t happen because Amy didn’t know who she was yet, so obviously hadn’t done Demons Run and hadn’t even got pregnant yet. Meaning that if she died, River would cease to exist, which would seriously disrupt timelines.
Amy needed to live. She needed to love Rory, travel with the Doctor, see the stars. She needed to meet a younger River, back in Berlin.
River had sent Amy out the room, on the pretense of desperately needing to find the Doctor, but there was no other way this could be fixed, he would know that. All those times he’d hinted at, now they’d never be. Nothing more than dreams.
River had sometimes wondered how she’d die, and now she knew; she’d die saving Amy. She wouldn’t have it any other way.
She pressed the button with a smile on her lips, because she was meant to be here, and she was glad she was.
