Talk Me Down

Faith is in need of a friend to talk to about her feelings and what happened between her and Ignatius, so she invites Aolani over for dinner.

To say that the evening with Ignatius had left Faith feeling a little heartbroken would have been an understatement. He'd left, clearly angry with her as he slammed the door behind him, and she'd cried herself to sleep that night. She had no idea where she stood with him, but things had been icy between them for the past few days. They were never alone together, using Avery as a buffer between them, and it was exhausting her. Faith felt as though she just didn't know enough about Ignatius' condition, and that he didn't want to tell her because he wanted to protect her. What upset her was that he was trying to protect her from himself.

With so many questions on her mind and in desperate need of someone to talk to, she'd invited Aolani around for a dinner with her and Avery. Avery had been missing her, especially because of her shifts at work, and he was bouncing around excitedly waiting for her while Faith was in the kitchen, finishing off the meal. The doorbell went and he loudly shouted "MUM! AUNTIE LANI'S HERE!" before rushing to the front door.

Faith followed him, given the constant warnings Ignatius had drilled into her about locking the door. She watched as her son unlocked the door, giving him a look as he opened it and threw himself at Aolani's legs. "I missed you," he told her, grabbing her hand and dragging her in. "Hi Lani," Faith offered, giving her a hug. "I'm glad you could come," she said as she led the group into the dining room. "Dinner will be ready shortly. Can I get you a drink?" While Faith was hungry, she was pretty eager to get dinner out of the way and Avery into bed so that she could talk to her friend.

Respite

Summary: After bonding over Lani’s weekend away, Faith and Aolani have gotten together to relax at Faith’s place while a friend babysits. It’ll give Aolani the chance to relax and unwind, especially after a painful realisation about her friends.

It wasn’t very often that Faith was away from Avery, but when she was, it was a strange feeling to overcome. She loved her son, truly, but the silence in the apartment she rented was welcoming. It was a nice break from the constant noise that seemed to envelope the place, but that did not last long. Usually it was no more than half an hour before she was wishing he was back with her. He was her entire world, and being apart from him felt a lot like she was being torn in two. But the break was good for both of them. He was having a sleepover at a friend's house, and she was having a friend of her own round for some food and a glass of wine.

It was strange for her to have someone she could call a friend. With constantly moving around, Faith found it difficult to connect with anyone. A chance encounter at her place of work meant that now she had a friend in the form of Aolani, who preferred being called Lani. She was so different to a lot of the people recently who had tried to become Faith's friend. Most were mothers, and only seemed to care about talking about their own children. Lani was different, and it was refreshing to have some time, no matter how brief, to go back to being 'Faith' instead of 'Mum'. It was a title she loved, but it wasn't all that she was.

She'd been checking on the dinner, knowing that Aolani would be there at any moment. Everything was looking good, and she had a bottle of wine on the side with some glasses, ready to open it. She needed it after a long week, and the knock at the door suggested that Aolani might need it to. "Coming!" she called, apron still on as she went to the door and answered it to her new found friend.

Soul Kitchen

Summary: At a small American-style diner in an English port city, Faith is working. She’s pulling a double shift, eager to get as much money as she can with her son’s birthday coming up. What she isn’t expecting from this shift is the surprise she’ll get.

“Cheeseburger with bacon and cheese fries?” Faith asked, smiling and putting the plate down in front of the customer when they made eye contact with her. “Pulled pork hotdog with fries?” This plate too was placed in front of the relevant customer, offering a smile. “Is there anything else I can get you?”

When the response was no Faith walked away, grabbing the cleaning supplies and heading to a recently vacated table. The plates and glasses had already been cleared away, so she just needed to wipe down the table. She did it as quickly as she could, managing to get the table clean as the bell on the door went, indicating that another customer had walked in.

The hostess took the customer to the table, heading over to the till area and letting out a deep breath. Faith joined her, giving her a smile. “Do you want to take your break?” she asked, watching as her colleague shook her head. “No. I still owe you a break anyway.”

“Let me sort this customer out and then I can take my break, how does that sound?” Faith suggested, still with a smile on her face. Her colleague smiled right back at her, “I envy how happy you are all of the time,” she said, heading off to deal with a shout of “excuse me?” from another table.

If only you knew.

Faith adjusted her name badge to give herself a moment of recovery from the statement, heading over to the newest arrival. “Hi. What can I get for you?” she asked.
