Obamacare "Fraud is inevitable"
CNBC, the business channel, is reporting that Obamacare is a dream come true for con artists and swindlers. Apparently, scammers have been at it for over a year but the government is getting ready for a surge as the exchanges open on October 1st and Obamacare goes live-ish (favored groups are exempted, regular people not.)
“I believe the incidents are going to skyrocket as that date approaches,” said Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center. “And even people who are smart and savvy could get taken, so we are very concerned about the potential for some serious financial harm.”
“There are fake exchanges already up and running on the Internet,” said Monica Lindeen, Montana’s Commissioner of Securities and Insurance. “If you do a search and type in ‘exchange,’ you’ll find all sorts of websites that claim to be in the exchange when they are not.”
“Fraud is inevitable, said Covered California spokesman Dana Howard, ”There are going to be schemes and individuals who will attempt to deceive the consumer at every corner,” she said.
And it’s not just these criminals. The need for staff in the insurance companies and exchanges is so immediate that background checks are at a minimum. These people will have only a basic understanding of confidentiality. In California, where Obamacare goes by the name of Covered Califormia,
Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones has written to Covered California urging officials to add more protections to prevent “criminals from becoming enrollment counselors and enrollment counselors from becoming criminals.”
Oh great, Obamacare is all set to bring shady people in to take advantage of the most vulnerable people in the population.
