Falkner Evans - The Point of the Moon
Falkner Evan's new record falls in line with jazz tradition while still showcasing the influence of modern jazz. Most of the music on this album is fairly relaxed. The musicians seem to be more focused on precision rather than instrumental virtuosity. Although listeners will not find themselves stunned by the technical abilities of the performers, the maturity of this band is obvious from the beginning. In many ways, holding back on one's physical abilities can be a sure sign of a musician who has developed a unique approach. Evans contributes several original tracks to form this album. His playing is tasteful, but it is his writing which takes center stage. The addition of Gary Versace on the final two tracks is a nice change as well. Versace adds organ on the track "Off the Top", which gives the tune a strong Jimmy Smith vibe. The band's version of Jobim's "O Grande Amor" is an interesting choice for a latin tune. It would be nice to see more players dg through the Jobim catalog these days...as long as they are putting their own spin on it.
