Dries Van Noten Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear
At Tory Burch...
As a part time sales associate at Tory Burch I wear a lot of hats. I am a:
· Stylist
· Brand Ambassador
· Friend
· Hustler
· Part-time Athlete
· Great Listener
My job is multifaceted, but that’s why I love it. Most days I’m running around, assisting one to two clients at a time while corresponding with my BOH (back of house) crew to make sure we have the desired item, or at the very least are able to locate and ship the product. I’m constantly on my headset requesting this, locating that. “Can I get a shoe check? I need a Travel Minnie, Shiraz, size 8.5-9. Thanks!”
What I love most about working at a luxury boutique with a wide product assortment is I’m not just working with shoes and handbags, which let’s be honest, can be a bit redundant. Sometimes I find myself in the fitting room with a client who has a special event approaching and is unsure about what to wear. This is where the listening comes in. It is so important when styling a client to pay close attention. In most cases they are unsure of what they are looking for and rely on you to connect the dots. For example, I had an elderly woman in need of a cocktail dress for a business party. After looking over the invitation, I just simply conversed with her. From our conversation I was able to gather: where she worked, how she spent her free time, and her favorite style choices. It was all the information I needed to make the best suggestions possible.
However, to make educated suggestions in any product category you’ve got to know more than just what the client is looking for- you have to understand the brand and what they offer. Once I accepted my position I immediately began studying the products. Now that I’ve got the basics covered I am constantly reviewing new products, materials used, and general pricing. These are aspects of a brand that any sales associate and stylist must keep up with in order to stay sharp.
At the end of the day my #1 role is to sell…given the job title that’s a little obvious, but as a commission based sales associate I want to really dive in to what that looks like. Every month the store has a sales goal that is divided by each sales associate then divided by week. The ultimate goal is to reach your set sales goal for the month. Seems easy enough right? Wrong. In slower months, i.e. July through early September it is a lot harder to reach those monthly goals. Climbing out of a sales deficit is stressful, but that’s where the hustle comes in. Any down time is spent outreaching. Outreaching is contacting clients and new customer via email or phone about new and exciting things going on within the company. Whether it’s the launch of a new logo, like the Gemini Link, or simply making clients aware of a new Fall ready-to-wear (RTW) collection, keeping clients up to date about the brand makes them feel special and helps drive traffic back into the store.
For anyone interested in this line of work, I hope this provided some insight. Thanks for reading!
