Fall Concert Series: Sept. 23rd, 2014 - Wonder Ballroom
Last night, we entered the Portland neighborhood of Eliot to visit once again the Wonder Ballroom, by far my favorite (and most intimate) venue I've been to. Doors opened at 7:30, and after the inevitable wait and build up of excitement, opener starRo sucked the now filled-out crowd immediately in to his 40-minute down-tempo set. The L.A.-based Japanese-American producer totally killed it, with original tunes as well as notable remixes of BANKS's Waiting Game and Disclosure's Latch. While his SoundCloud features some incredible music, make no mistake - this is an incredible artist and producer, best experienced live. Chet Faker took the stage a bit later, and the crowd was happy to hear him lead his set off with Blush, a crowd favorite for sure. At one point, Faker transitions into a sort of live jam, where he messed around on his keyboard and sound boards, making music never before heard, but all the same an incredible testament to why we all love him as an artist. Following, Faker encouraged the audience to put away the cell phones (as so many artists now have to do) if only for just the next bit, and we fell in unison as he led in with No Diggity ("the one that started it all") and led out with Melt; and melt we did. After a series of other album tracks, such as To Me and 1998, Chet left the stage, then returned minutes later to wrap up the set for the night with Cigarettes & Loneliness, followed by his hit Gold, and closed out the night with a stripped version of Talk is Cheap. A humble artist from entrance to exit, this was a class act in the smooth R&B influenced indie and electronica filling the music world currently. Chet Faker proved took any expectations you had about how you'd experience his music live and shattered them, not playing to the album but instead playing music truly in the moment. In place of a well rehearsed set that energizes or extrapolates upon an album and it's tracks, Faker uses the approach that playing the same way every time is just too boring, and it's good to see an artist like this sometimes, willing to change it up with out the fear that fans will be disappointed. All together, starRo and Chet Faker proved to be two of the best down-tempo producers at the moment, closing out their last show of their 2-week North American concert circuit. A show not to be forgotten soon.
