Fallen Grace by Mary Hooper
Guess what I found? It was buried on my desk.
Grace is an orphan just barely scraping by with her "troubled" sister Lily. They sell watercress on the streets of London to earn just enough for rent in a tenement and food. She simply doesn't have the resources for a baby. That's why she's on the funeral train when we first meet her. She had just given birth to a stillborn boy and she's on her way to smuggle him into a coffin.
And her trials and tribulations are just beginning.
Although she and her sister are scraping by, soon fortune turns against them and they are in danger of being turned out of their lodgings. Grace is taken in by the Unwins (a family of funeral directors) as a Mute. Lily is to be a servant. Around this same time, an advertisement goes out looking for Lily because her father has died and left her a fortune! Will Grace find out about this? Do the Unwins have ulterior motives? Can the girls survive?
OK, yeah, it's a bit much, but it's pretty fun. Hooper knows her way around a climax and Grace is very likable. She's smart and works her situation as best she can without whining about how her life should be better. For a book full of misery, no one spends any time all angsty and feeling sorry for themselves.
I would call this a "Hi-Low" book, since the vocabulary is pretty easy and the font was good-sized (at least in the galley I have) . It's also got enough twists and turns, romance, and suspense to keep any reluctant reader going. However, this one is best left to the high schools (Grace did not get pregnant willingly).
