Falling Stacks – No Wives (Battle Worldwide)
I like how the back cover of this album looks like something that I would find amongst the boxes of 50's/60's gospel junk records that any number of grandparents around the country dump off at thrift stores. The front cover however is of a goat, so I'm just left confused on that one. I'm guessing spontaneous and weird is something that Falling Stacks are trying to obtain here with their debut album No Wives, which follows up some EP's that I honestly haven't heard but the world wide web would lead me to believe are life changing. I have my doubts about that one. Not to say that this record isn't without its qualities, as it's an overall decent listen if noise tinged math-rock is something that rarely leaves a bad taste behind for you. A track like “Los Ticos” actually gets rather jammy while delivering a solid bass groove and makes use of some cool guitar interplay towards the end of it. It seems though as if Falling Stacks take more from the pages of bands like U.S. Maple or Trumans Water and try and apply it to something like Fugazi with mixed results. When it hits though, it makes for some intriguing moments. Maybe I should go back and listen to those EP's... Falling Stacks - Los Ticos (stream) BUY IT!
