God do I hate false drama
I’m working my way through Jane the Virgin, and Jane is at her orientation for grad school when she gets a phone call from her son’s pediatrician after her professor gives a “the electronic leash is evil” speech. She spends ten seconds looking back and forth from her vibrating phone to her professor, who is glaring at her as she mulls over whether or not to answer the phone, and then she just says “I’m sorry” and runs out of the class to answer the call. Afterwards, she finds that she isn’t allowed back in.
Dammit, just say “this is my son’s doctor” before you answer!
I seriously hate false drama like this. All teacher’s hate having their class interrupted, but if a doctor is calling, especially your son’s doctor, you answer that #$%&ing phone. If they punish you for answering the phone in an emergency, then A) This person is an amoral asshole and is not just a “stern teacher looking for your commitment”, and B) You could go to their supervisor at the university and say “This teacher punished me for answering a call from a doctor” and laugh as they rush out to yell at the guy. True, in this instance the call turned out to be meaningless, but nobody knew that until you answered the call.
It’s just so pointless. This isn’t ‘being controlled by the electronic leash’ or ‘addicted to social media’ or any kind of millennial-bashing/intellectual critique they might think it is, since it’s not a Facebook status update or meme or new vine, it’s a call from a doctor. Those have been happening for more than half a century. Do you know what they did in the “old days” before cell phones? They called the office and the office sent somebody to pull you out of the class to take the call, because it’s from a doctor.
I just hate false drama like this so much.
