a series of questions answered by seleneās mirae at the press showcase for her solo comeback with āsirenā.
how would you describe this release?
āsirenā is the next step in my journey as a soloist. there were people i showed this song too who saidĀ āof course, the song is just like miraeā and there were others who were surprised. in that sense, i hope this release can be both surprising and well-fit. it shows another point of the story that unfolded inĀ ābloomā andĀ āgashinaā while having a persona of its own.
what is your favorite part about this release?
āāsirenā is the release where i get to be the most bold yet. whileĀ ābloomā had its own boldness andĀ āgashinaā was confident,Ā āsirenā is unapologetic and relatable to me.ā
what were preparations for this release like?
āunlikeĀ ābloomā andĀ āgashinaā which were both picked out far in advance and as a pair, i choseĀ āsirenā after i had finished promotingĀ āgashinaā. it was also written with me in mind by one of the producers who worked onĀ āgashinaā after i had spoken about the feelings i wanted to express in my next song. in that way,Ā āsirenā has a different fit from any song i released before, by myself or in selene, as it had been tailor-made for me from the very beginning.ā
what do you hope to achieve through this release?
āi received so much love for my previous songs and selene as a whole always receives so much support from our fans that i wanted to repay them by giving them a song they can enjoy and sing along to.ā
what is the most memorable lyric or moment from this single/album for you?
āthe lineĀ āthe beautiful me of your fantasies doesnāt existā resonated with me when i first heard it. no one is a perfect ideal. if you expect someone to be one, youāll be rudely awakened by their blaring sides, like a warning siren.ā
what inspired the concept of this comeback?
āwhenĀ āsirenā was being prepared, we focused on the ideas of both mythological sirens and a siren, like a warning or alarm. the song and the concept have those dual meanings and i worked my hardest to express both well.ā
your last single,Ā āgashinaā, became famous for its point choreography. doesĀ āsirenā have a catchy point choreography too?
ārather than hoping to have a viral killing point, i want to focus on preparing a performance that embodies the concept well and is eye-catching. the chorus choreography is fun to me, but for this song, i wanted to perform the choreography to feel siren-like more than anything.ā
1. youāve been in the fashion scene, especially with your partnership with chanel. how could you describe chanel?
"timeless and a staple of fashion through the eras. thereās been transitional phases from karl lagerfeld toĀ virginie viard ā but the essence of chanel has always been the same in creating these timeless pieces that continue to be staples of fashion despite what year and what trends. they donāt follow trends and they stick to their foundation, which i think makes the brand unique with a stark sense of identity.ā
2. what can you tell us about what haon has been up to?
āafter releasing music non-stop for a time period, iāve decided to step back and sit in the producerās seat for a bit. at this point, i feel like my brainās thrown away so many songs i planned to release. restarted, only to pick back up to find nothing i want to put out. so, call it a break in terms of promoting things since i value authenticity. instead, iāve been trying to find bursts of inspiration by diving into different genres, attempting to touch on different groups discographies instead.ā
3. what can you say chung gyujeong has been up to?
āi never deviate from myself, at least, iām a creature of habit. you can say iām up to drinking coffees, attempting to work out to get healthier. stuck in the studio, hanging with my cat. iām looking into adopting fish.ā
4. platinum has been a staple in the industry, how have you found yourself holding up all these years?
āi donāt attribute it to anything more than just hanging on and seeing the days go by. enough time, and youāll find that years have pasts ā i donāt know how the longevity lasts, but i do know that if i were solo, iām not sure this would have lasted as long.ā
5. youāre known for your extensive shoe collection in the celebrity world, what is your go-to shoe these days?Ā
āiām tired of the jordan trend that i see everywhere, so iāve held back on showing those. lately, iāve been into adidas vintage pieces. old school sambas or gazelles.ā
6. lastly, are there any events that fans can look forward to in these upcoming months?
āas iāve mentioned, i donāt plan on releasing much music. maybe youāll see a few collabs, but other than that ā i would say look into platinumās next comeback as i think the catchiness of it will inundate the crowds.ā
āitās elegant, but itās fun. a bit weird, but classic ā kind of a conundrum, but what is equinox if not a conundrum? i think itās fun, and a brighter version in a different light that we havenāt shown ourselves.ā
2. how are you feeling about this comeback?
āi feel happy ā i feel excited. i feel like a five year old with new fingerpaints, where the image of what you could drawing becomes vivid. you can see the finished product, and the reception when you show your mother. except, everything is still in anticipation, and just brewing inside your imagination.ā
3. what is your favorite part about this comeback?
āthereās dance elements of ballet. not exactly ballet weāre performing, but weāre creating some mimicry of basic ballet stances ā i think the conceptualization of ballerinas is just beauty in motion. the overall aesthetic of how everything clashes together in an avant garde way makes the artist in me giddy.ā
4. what is a memorable story from preparations for this comeback?
āthereās a part that i have right before the chorus, and maybe this is more tmi than a memorable story ā but iāll share it either way. during that filming of the music video, i had to re-film it multiple times because i kept hiccuping. itās my bodyās aversion to being the center, and i think thatās a good reason why our leader is the center in most of our discography.ā
5. do you have any specific hopes for this comeback?
āi hope you all enjoy a new side of equinox weāve shown, and keep us in your memories as we continue embarking on this journey weāre in together.ā
6.Ā what is your favorite song on the album?
āfor the first time, i think the title track is my favorite. either that, or bamboleoā
7. you created another b-side track, is there a way you can describe bambaleo?
ābambaleo means swaying or wobbling in spanish. isnāt that funny? you can be clumsy or you can be elegant all within the same word ā itās about perspective and context. so, similarly, bambaleo is a song you can be clumsy to or you can be elegant to as you dance around. the sounds are heavily influenced by city pop, except instead of driving and wobbling, the songās meant so you lay in bed and imagine yourself dancing.ā
8. you recently went viral for your part in feel my rhythm, and many people have been using it as a challenge ā who have you seen it do it the best?
ārecently, i came across tanaka do his take. i thought red chilli flakes instead of confetti was funny, and i found myself re-watching that clip over and over again.āĀ
a series of questions answered by seleneās mirae during seleneās comeback showcase.
how would you describe this comeback?
āthis comeback is the last of our four seasons, four colors project. this time, weāve come back representing the blank slate of winter and the feeling of being ready for anything. white is a color often associated with the undefined, but to me, this comeback shows white as something so completely colored-in it can be comfortable taking on anything without changing its core self.ā
how are you feeling about this comeback?
āi love our comeback. i may be biased since white wind is the album meant to represent me, but this comeback combines both the well-loved sides of selene and new sides of ourself we havenāt explored yet. in that way, i feel like it represents all of us well.ā
what is your favorite part about this comeback?
āthe music video was fun to film! though it was work, we got to have fun on set.ā
what is your favorite song on the album?
āgogobebe! our company chose the title track well this time. upbeat, party-like songs are often associated with summer, but i hope selene can make even the winter time an exciting time for everyone when they listen to gogobebe.ā
do you have any specific hopes for this comeback?
āi only hope the members and i get to perform a lot and meet our fans often this comeback!ā
what is a memorable story from preparations for this comeback?
āi canāt say too much without spoiling what we have prepared, but i laughed a lot while preparing some special elements we have planned for stages ofĀ āwaggyā. preparing for the stages were memorable, but when we get to perform them, theyāll be even more memorable for me.ā
please tell us about your solo song on this mini-album.
ā25 is a song about growing up. as i recently made my solo debut last year, we decided my song for seleneās mini-album should be something different than my own solo music. the song reflects on how iāve grown up during my time in the group. i was eighteen when we debuted and twenty-five when we all re-signed our contracts with gold star. now, iām thirty-one, so all of these years iāve spent in selene are very meaningful to me.ā
how does the title trackĀ āgogobebeā express your personality?
āthe company did well choosing a title track for this mini-album that iām meant to be the main character of. āgogobebeā expresses the side of me that will boldly enjoy my life and take the best of each situation i am put into.ā
the concept of the photoshoot is spring. whatās a must-have fashion item for you in the spring?Ā
"since spring weather can be pretty unpredictable, i find that having a light cardigan or jean jacket on hand is always helpful. the weather can be really nice and then an hour later it could become chilly, so something to help you prepare for that is nice to have found. preferrably in a lighter color since it is spring, no?ā
thereās been word about the filming for yumiās cells season 2 starting soon. is there anything you can share about that?
āwell, it has been confirmed for a second season, so i can tell you thatās happening. iāve also had to attach extensions for this shoot, so thatās probably another hint? iāve received the script, or at least whatās written of it so far, and i can assure viewers that season 2 will be just as fun and exciting as season 1. i hope you all look forward to it.ā
while this was far from your first acting project, it does seem like youāve made quite a mark as yumi. is there anything about her that makes her more special to you as well?
āyouāre right. this isnāt my first lead, but this is the first time iāve played a role that was also part of the title of the project. thereās a big emphasis on yumiās cells because a story that centers around yumi, and i think i felt that pressure at first. however, sheās also the character that feels the most humane. that might sound weird, but iāve had to express the most emotions as yumi, and thatās what makes her special to me.ā
is there something youāre looking forward to in 2023?
ānothing in particular. i try to be thankful for each day i get. my birthdayās coming up in march, seleneās 13th debut anniversary will also be this year, but those are just one of many days in the year. i think iām just looking foward to having a happy year.ā
āK-pop star and dancing and acting sensation Hwang Mirae is Vogue Hong Kong's January cover star.ā
a series of questions answered by seleneās mirae to accompany her cover and spread for vogue hong kongās january 2023 issue.
youāve been described as a style icon. how would you describe your personal style?
āmy personal style is best described asĀ āmiraeā. i dress in the way that expresses my own preferences and personality rather than trying to fit into any one kind of pre-set style category. lately, iām very into the use of lines in fashion and iāve been experimenting with that. i really like whatās muglerās been doing lately, and of course, how bvlgari works creative lines into their jewelry.ā
how would you describe your relationship with your fellow members?
āselene is my found family. weāve been through our whole careers together and itās allowed us to shape each other in ways usually only family does. selene and my fellow members mean the world to me and they always will.ā
what makes you smile these days?
āworking hard and seeing it pay off. training hard for a stunt and pulling it off well enough to earn praise or recording a song over and over again until i get the take that is just right. thatās been my reason for smiling as of late.ā
did you have any expectations when selene debuted that you would be so successful?
āi hoped and believed all of the hard work i witnessed and was a part of would pay off, but you never know. you canāt predict things like that.ā
what is something you miss about life pre-debut? do you ever miss your trainee days?
āi miss that sense of youthfulness. no matter what youāve been through, youāre less jaded as a teenager than as an adult, but, no, not really. that was a time in my life that was fitting for where i was then, but right now, iām really happy with where i am now.ā
what do you do to unwind in your free time?
āi like to work out or pamper myself. usually, i do a lot of exercising in my downtime, but because the drama iām working on right now is so physically involved, i was suggested to try to rest some more when iām not on set, so iāve taken up taking long bubble baths.ā
what is a fact about you that most people donāt know?
āiāve been a celebrity so long, most things people already know about me. people who arenāt fans might not know that i like to alter my own clothes to fit my style. itās something iāve been doing since i was a teenager.ā
1. youāre styled by dior today ā so, in your own words, what is dior to you?
maria grazia chiuri has been nothing short of amazing during my partnership with dior. to me, dior is essence. not defined by a classy timeless touch, but something of essence whether itās playing with new trends or bringing back the old iterations of past designs. they mix it up to create their own color and scent ā theyāre undefined by limitations. i think thatās what draws me to the brand in the first place.Ā
2. a longstanding fashion icon with your various partnerships over the years being a global ambassador for dior, and releasing successful solo albums ā what can you say now about taking over netflix with your new drama, our beloved summer?
i never expected myself to ever act ā sometimes, i feel like iām acting in my day to day life. maybe itās because i resonate a lot with kook yeon soo, or iām just in a stage at my life where reading off a script doesnāt feel like second nature anymore, but this drama has meant a lot. i can only be grateful that itās been accepted by the public in such a way. i donāt know if iāll take over any more series, but i can assure you this one remains close to my heart.
3. the piece is titledĀ āwe donāt know minjung yetā, why do you think the piece is surrounded around the mystery of you?
if i knew, would there be a piece in the first place? i donāt know why people believe thereās a mystery about who i am ā i let myself show in pieces. itās like a puzzle game for the public to put together to decipher who i am. if youāre good at mind riddles and word tricks, maybe you do know me. if not, then you donāt. i donāt want to define who i am with my own words.
4. but if you had to, how would you describe seo minjung?
someone who feels like pastels on mondays, then monochrome on thursdays. someone who spends the weekends painting memories in watercolors, only to forget the rest of the canvas on a tuesday. iām a contradiction, but isnāt everyone?
5. being a veteran in this industry, what can you say you took away from your career?
you say it like my careerās over ā itās not over, at least i donāt think so. iāve met lots of people, and i learn each day how to navigate different intrapersonal relationships while managing interpersonal ones. something they like to call ballance.
6. after a long day, how do you like to relax?
when i tell people, they think itās sad. but i like to sit down after a long day, on the sofa with my dog, and then open up a bottle of chamisul soju. i drink from a soju glass and pretend like iām having a conversation with someone who knows every facet of me ā who else knows me better than myself?
7. youāve had lots of memorable moments in your career, what do you think fans remember you most as?
the rainbow dress from peekaboo ā i feel like thatās when people knew my name. to know someoneās name is intimate, donāt you think? maybe not a fashion trend, but at least it stuck in peopleās minds.
8. lastly, what is the best advice someone has given you?
one time a fan told me that itās okay to cry. itās okay to be honest. itās okay to do what makes you happy ā in the moment, people donāt let words comfort them because it doesnāt apply when you feel your heart crack. but in hindsight, you look back and realize the only way it was possible to get through those difficult times was because you allowed yourself to cry, feel emotions, and be honest with yourself.
