Famicase 2017
Meteor over in Nakano is currently holding it’s annual Famicase exhibit from April 29 - May 30, 2017. This yearly event showcases concept famicom cartridge art for fictional games. I’m not sure why, but this year’s exhibition felt smaller than last year’s despite having roughly the same number of submissions. As ever, the quality of submissions on display was quite high.
This year I saw more than one “sequel” to previous entries including Pastel Powder Keg 2 from artist Petitcreme, and a sequel from Corey Schmitz to his excellent “Children” submission from 2014. Trump also proved to be a popular theme with around 3 or 4 carts on display.
Visitors can vote on their favorite designs, grab a free poster of the lineup, play fan created games based on submissions from previous years, and of course check out the upstairs shop which deals in apparel and other accessories. They’ve even got some King of Games merchandise and Splatoon apparel.
I highly recommend checking it out if you’re in Tokyo during the month of May. You’ll likely be visiting Nakano anyway to stock up on figures and retro games at Broadway, so why not carve out a few extra minutes? Meteor is just a 10 minute walk away from Nakano station’s North exit.
Here are some of my favorite submissions from this year’s show.
Saved my favorite for last!
A really great submission by Ghostarcade that manages to evoke in me a sense of nostalgia for a game I’ve never played.
