Wasted Shirt — Fungus II (Famous Class)
“Double the Dream,” the single from Wasted Shirt’s first album fills the breaks in Brian Chippendale’s rocketing drum line with electro-shocked blurts of “What!” (or “Wah!” or something, the lyrics are not really the main point). They yell like they’re pulling up hands that accidentally touched a hot stove. It’s as if even the two main participants in this duo can’t believe how hard it’s going. Given who they are—Chippendale one-half of Lightning Bolt and Ty Segall the last remaining unabashed proponent of rock and roll guitar—that’s remarkable and a good reason for checking this unruly debut.
Segall + Chippendale = Wasted Shirt
Segall + Chippendale = Wasted Shirt
It took me many years to get into Ty Segall. I never really heard what everyone else did about the guy. I thought he was pretty prolific, and I gave him credit for being a good songwriter, but for the most part the fuzzed-up garage rock/noise pop trip he was on didn’t do it for me. Then he released Manipulatorand my view of Segall changed. I heard the Bowie/T. Rex love, the funky drums, and the…

Famous Class Records must have a sweet reputation. Have you looked at their releases? Everything from Deerhoof to Parquet Courts to Mikal Cronin.
Looking through the old posts, I see that I’ve referenced Mikal Cronin, but never posted about his releases.
Resolved. Mikal Cronin’s first album (Trouble in Mind) is one of my all-time favorites. It’s the perfect combination of punk and melody. Famous Class is now releasing his first new music since 2015. “Undertow” does show the maturity of age, but its still a gem.
Mikal Cronin is a Los Angeles based musician who has worked extensively with Ty Segall (which is probably the best comparison).

I can’t be the only person who hears early INXS in the new Civic EP “Those Who No”. This Melbourne band has put together and incredibly catchy power/punk/pop 4-song EP. I’ve been enjoying this over the past month, but just getting around to posting it now.
It is out on Anti-Fade (Australia) and Famous Class (U.S.)

Various Artists - Start Your Own Fucking Show Space // Famous Class [LTD To 1000]
Famous Class will release a compilation of live recordings, Start Your Own Fucking Show Space, on August 5th.
For nearly a decade, Death by Audio was a recording studio, an effect pedal workshop, a music venue, and a home to musicians and artists. Oliver Ackermann (A Place to Bury Strangers) found the warehouse in 2005 and along with fellow artists in Dirty on Purpose, he started hosting concerts to help pay to build out bedrooms and studios. By 2007 DBA was hosting bands almost every night. Over 1,800 shows later, DBA announced its impending eviction with an epic final month of programming. Start Your Own Fucking Show Space tracks the last days of DBA in November 2014, a sweaty, bittersweet homecoming for many artists who began their career there.
Presented in chronological running order, Start Your Own Fucking Show Space features live recordings from 26 bands over the venue’s final month. The LP set is housed in a double gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves listing every one of the 1,800+ shows in the venue’s history. There is a limited pressing of the compilation on clear with opaque blue & red vinyl, available while supplies last.
Here’s a breakdown of the different packages available:
