This week’s Featured Article is It runs DOOM, an internet meme and fan activity wherein people modify or hack electronic devices to run the 1993 video game Doom. There is often an emphasis on novel devices or platforms not considered to be a video game console or personal computer, including landline telephones, TI-83 calculators, and even the Archive of Our Own.

Do You Want to Make Some Art (and Win Some Prizes)?

Hello Friends!

We are extremely excited about our three Guests of Honor this year, and want to make sure their amazing work gets some love from our attendees. Also we just like making events happen. To these ends, we hereby announce a Fanworks Festival! This will take place on a weekend of your choosing in the first few months of 2021. Please fill out this survey to indicate which weekends are best for you.

This event is open to fanfiction, fanart, fanmixes, cosplay, filk, graphics, soup, whatever you can think of. We’re not putting limits on what you can make, because creativity is limitless! You can make absolutely anything you want. There will be one day for each creator, so for example, on Friday you post things inspired by Ursula Vernon’s work, on Saturday you post things inspired by Diane Duane’s work, and on Sunday you post things inspired by Mark Oshiro’s work! We’re also not limiting this event to any particular fandoms, so you’re welcome to post fanworks inspired by any of our GoH’s works. This is not limited to YW.

As a little extra bonus, we will be raffling off some prizes for participants in the event! There will be three prizes, one for each day/GoH. You’re welcome to make more than one fanwork, but you can only enter once per day. So if you make a fic for Door Into Fire and art for the YW series, you get one entry for the Saturday prize, but if you make art for YW, a fanmix for the clockwork boys, and art for Each of Us a Desert, that’s three entries! This isn’t a winner/loser deal, it’ll be a random draw from the pool of people who entered works on each day, and the prize packs will be nearly the same each day. The only exception is that if you make a fanwork based on Mark’s work, you have the chance to win a badge to CrossingsCon!

Playing Fans: Negotiating Fandom and Media in the Digital Age (Fan Studies)

Fans are everywhere: from Fifty Shades of Grey to Veronica Mars, from Comic-Con to sitcom, from niche to Geek Chic, fans are becoming the most visible and important audience of the twenty-first century. For years the media industries ignored fans and fan activities, but now they’re paying attention and a lot of money to develop a whole new wave of products intended to harness the power of fandom. What impact do such corporate media efforts have on fan practice and fan identities? And are the media industries actually responding to fans as fans want them to? In Playing Fans, Paul Booth argues that the more attention entertainment businesses pay to fans, the more mainstream fans have become popularized. But such mainstreaming ignores important creative fan work and tries to channel fandom into activities lucrative for the companies. Offering a new approach to the longstanding debate about the balance between manipulation and subversion in popular culture, the author argues that we can understand the current moment best through the concepts of pastiche and parody. This sophisticated alternative to conceiving of fans as either dupes of the media industry or rebels against it takes the discussion of “transformative” and “affirmative” fandom in a productive new direction. With nuanced analyses of the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff, the representations of fans in TV shows like Community and films like Fanboys, SuperWhoLock fans’ use of gifs, and the similarities in discussions of slash fandom and pornographic parody films, this book reveals how fans borrow media techniques and media industries mimic fan activities. Just as the entertainment industry needs fans to succeed, so too do fans need—and desire—the media, and they represent their love through gif fics, crowdfunding, and digital cosplay. Everyone who wants to understand how consumers are making themselves at home in the brave new world being built by the contemporary media should read this book.

Fan Girls and the Media: Creating Characters, Consuming Culture

In the broad spectrum of popular culture, one can be a fan of just about anything: comic books, television shows, fantasy novels, movie franchises, musical artists, and so on. Because fans are fluid and ever-changing, however, defining them poses a challenge. As a result, too few scholars have yet to focus on the impact of gender in media consumption, leading to a limited portrait of what male and female fans look for. In Fan Girls and the Media: Creating Characters, Consuming Culture, Adrienne Trier-Bieniek has assembled a collection of essays that demonstrate the gendered aspect of fandom and explore the ways different forms of media challenge stereotypical ideals of how culture is consumed. Contributors examine a wide range of fan issues—from gendered stereotypes in the Star Trek and Twilight franchises to gender roles in Tyler Perry films and The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Other essays look at the female comedy fan community, the appeal of avenging-woman characters written by men, and the use of social media by women in the video-game culture. This collection describes how gender is present in fandom, demonstrating the need to combat the marginalization of female identities in various cultural outlets. Fan Girls and the Media will be of interest to anyone studying fandom but also students and scholars of sociology, media, and gender studies.
