How do you feel about loanwords from irl languages in Mando’a?

Mando’a shouldn’t have many loanwords at all.

Mando’a can have loanwords, but they should be from other in-universe languages.

They’re ok, but only as long as they’re not easily recognisable.

They’re great! Mando’a should be a wild melting pot of many different languages.

More diminutives

I’ve been thinking Mando’a ought to have more diminutives. Why settle for just one? Why not have several you can stack like Finnish?

And I’ve also been reading about reduplication lately, so here are some suggestions:

“Pseudoreduplication”: a suffix -(V)Ci, where V is either the last vowel (dipthongs and long vowels are reduced to short vowels) or the unmarked /a/, and C is the consonant the last consonant in the base.

Looking through Wiktionary (not the most reliable, but pretty good when you just want “as many different etymologies as possible”), here are just some etymologies for mushroom in various languages, for your entertainment:

- swamp (the place where they grow)

- moss (something else it resembles)

- cap, bonnet (like mushroom caps): I have no words for cap, but I had been considering borrowing the British military acronym tos (tam o’shanter), but maybe not as a ‘cap,’ but as the iconic ‘pompom,’ which could also be same shape as some shrooms.

- tree + flower: shaap + *sar- > shasar?

- tree + child: kurshad; shapad > shabad

- a particular type of mushroom

- “toad food”, “toad’s bread”

- “toad’s chair”

- “dog urine”

- “dog’s bride” (sounds like there’s a folk tale to go with this one?)

- bulge: yaib, or maybe just yab or yaab or yab + a vowel. Yabi, yaba, yabo, yabu?

- swelling: maybe drashin? Which would be more of a growth than swelling…

- vegetation, mold: kyor > kyos, kyon, kyol, kyoru?

- “grows in the field”: actually bejii wouldn’t be a terrible rendition of this. Or perhaps bedrash(i or -a), or maybe bedresh (from bej + *drash-)?

- “little kettle/cauldron”: yagaidik?

- sore, skin eruption, itch

- boil, abscess

- pumpkin, squash

- dry

- wet, soggy

- “lamb’s belly”

- “something baked or roasted”

- eyes + vanish (apparently from a type of mushroom which could cause blindness)

- “dirt umbrella”

- earth + belch

- sponge

- bag, bladder: maybe related to gam? gamba, gamah..?

- “that which sprouts suddenly”: jidrashii?

- “one night’s spawn”: solcad or solcaad

(I just love languages, don’t you?)

Or it’s own root. You could make your own root by pick any permissible onset + a vowel (short, long, diphthong) + a permissible coda from this phonotactics post. Both consonant (cluster)s (onset and coda) are optional. And then optionally add a suitable suffix from this list. And there you have it, your very own Mando’a word that should at least sound like Mando’a.

I might go for something sound symbolic, maybe with a voiced stop b or g, and a rounded vowel o or u. Bubut, bola, gob-, gom-… idk, nothing’s catching right now.

I do think that picking mushrooms should be hunting mushrooms though. 🤔

Random thought while waiting for my laundry to finish:

Mando’a relative adverbs vaal (when, while) and vaii (where, direction; technically only as a part of the interrogative tion’vaii and adjective vaii’la) look like they’re related: *va- + a common suffix.

There’s no “how” in Mando’a. So how about… vaar (no relation to ‘early’)? Same *va- root + the common suffix -ar, which is usually associated with verbs/actions.

Irregular Mando’a plurals (that aren’t so irregular)

For words ending in a diphthong, a valid plural could be ‘e/-ye instead of -se. So basically e.g. /a͜ɪ/ + /ɛ/ > /a.jɛ/.

So for example,

aaray /ˈaː.ɾa͜ɪ/ > aaraye /aː.ˈɾa.jɛ/

shereshoy /ʃɛ.ˈɾe.ʃɔɪ̯/ > shereshoye /ʃɛ.ɾɛ.ˈʃɔ.jɛ/

yai /ʝa͜ɪ/ > yaye/yai’e /ˈʝa.jɛ/

Or if you wanted to really extend it, even other words ending in /i/:

gadi /ˈɡɐ.dɪ/ > gadye /ˈɡɐd.jɛ/

parjii /ˈpɐɾ.dʒiː/ > parjiye /pɐɾ.ˈdʒi.jɛ/

pirusti /pɪ.ˈɾʊs.tɪ/ > pirustye /pɪ.ˈɾʊst.jɛ/

arasii /ˌɐ.ɾɐ.ˈsi:/ > arasiye /ˌɐ.ɾɐ.ˈsi.jɛ/ or even /ɐ.ˈɾɐʃ.jɛ/

Although we do have a canon plural for jetii > jetiise, so this would be a departure from canon.

I think at least the stricter diphthong-only version could be a logical extension of (at least my) treatment of y in Mando’a, and it would parallel how words ending in u (the other semivowel) can also end in ‘e instead of -se:

ba’vodu /bɐ.ˈvɔ.dʊ/> bavodu’e /bɐ.ˈvɔ.dʊ.ʋɛ/

Or at least that’s an option for some dialect—I do love me different dialects and variation in conlangs—and something I might end up using in mine, at least the stricter diphthong version.
