It's wild in fandom when people complain about fanworks and fanart for having content that's basically indistinguishable from what's in the actual canon of the piece of media it's based on. And ppl will be like "No you don't understand! When this rich victorian white man wrote it, it was woke and nuanced, but when this queer person in fandom does it, it's clearly wrong and deranged!". Like sure.

"is the protagonist likeable" is a fine media analysis question on paper but in practice is so tainted by parasociality and - if you're talking about a female protagonist (as I literally always am) - casual misogyny that I would like to jettison it into the sun forever

I'm gonna be honest I think it's kinda dumb to call any form of farservice "queerbating". Like were you being really "tricked" or it's just that you can't take your fanservice like a champ and have to become an obsessive maniac about it screeching about it not being canon? Like I'm not saying queerbating is not a thing, but if a piece of media just likes to tease a lot of ships including straight ones they're not baiting you they're just giving you some food. Like maybe just accept your piece of cake and stop biting the hand that feeds you.

Edit: Also I hate it when people accuse celebrities of queerbating. Like unless they blatantly lie saying they're queer when they're not in any shape or form and then openly admit to it for some reason (??), you're not being "baited". Like maybe they're just figuring things out, maybe they're closeted, maybe they're just comfortable with showing affection, or they don't use labels, or they think it's no one's business, or again, it's just fanservice.

Like if you're so parasocially obsessed with knowing the sexuality of a complete stranger who'll never fuck you anyway that is entirely your fault.

It's been too long, let me try and predict future drama again 🔮

I predict that... in the course of less than one year, someone will try to accuse me of ignoring and excusing a fictional character's flaws and bad actions (which probably won't be true, and actually just a symptom of me trying to be more positive or the fact that I'm bad at multitasking and therefore will be too busy kicking Zuko instead, as always)

But here's the catch, the part I can't decide on. I can't predict which one of these two arguments they'll try to use on me:

1) "You just excuse their actions because this character is a man! You're clearly biased towards men!"

or

2) "You just excuse this character's actions because they're a woman! You're clearly biased towards women!"

it's gonna be either one of those i'm sure.
