Lot of new people finding me all of a sudden so here are my rent lowering gunshots:

- I post a lot about the Wilson family. I have a lot of particular opinions on them. The big one that might put off a lot of people - Slade shouldn't be, and in my writing, is not a pedo. Tara is a fetish character victim blamed by the narrative and villainized in pretty much every appearance and I will not perpetuate the jack off content of the writers who have REPEATED offenses of this nature. I don't believe a story with that kind of sensitive content will ever be done justice by dc. If you are uncomfortable or disagree with Tara being taken out of her context as a victim - this might not be the blog for you.

opinión on the under the red hood movie compared to the comic

Obviously it doesn't capture the nuance that the comic did, but it also made explicit changes that ultimately subtracted from the whole thing. I would NOT recommend using the movie as your base for Jason, and I desperately need people who have only watched the movie to stop engaging with my posts about the comics. Excluding Sheila, replacing Talia with Ra's, putting a focus on pit madness (unforgivable sin), and of course the neutered ending all make me reslly dislike it. I understand that the animated universe plays by different rules and can't have Bruce blatantly fuck up like he did in the comic, but I also don't care and thought the ending was stupid. It made Jason look incompetent and completely missed the point of the comic ending: The story is a tragedy, there is no third option, someone was always going to die in that building, inaction as a choice and a form of violence, ect.

I am a sucker for Jensen Ackles voice acting him though. I like that they kept most of Jason's monolog in there too! And despite missing Talia I do appreciate Ra's being showcased more empathetically, I do think that's an improvement from the comics. That's all I got for positives really. I don't like it and far too many people take it as gospel because its watered down enough that you don't have to actually put any brain power into analyzing it. They basically strip Jason of his bite and in changing the ending they lost the impact and poetic irony that the comic had. The pit madness of it all basically negates any of the original conflict or moral dilemma and softens the monolog as a result. Also there's an unhinged subsection of fans who swear on their lives the movie is the new main canon?? That's not true. That's factually incorrect. Animated projects are a part of the animated universe and are not canon to the comics. I don't know where this idea comes from.

Thinking a lot about Bruce's fervent desire for Jason to settle down with a wife and kids the way he doesn't feel he never can and how that impacts Jason's queer coding. Like of all Bruce's kids Jason is the one he most wants to have that traditional domestic life. That's his dream for Jason. A thing Jason has literally never once showed interest in!! Yes Jason is fond of kids and prone to taking them in but the white picket fence life with a wife and biological children? Never something we really see him shoot for. Because its NOT what he wants. He doesn't want to bring kids into this life, he only takes in kids who are already involved. His one mainline civilian girlfriend had to pursue him and then they broke up because she got possessed by his ex a week later. Jason has no civilian identity and hasn't expressed a desire for one. Bruce literally lobotomized him so he could go live the life Bruce chose not to pursue and keeps making the choice to not pursue. Bruce thinks there is only one way for himself (and therefore also Jason) to be truly happy but he won't give up Batman because he perceives Batman as valuable and necessary but he barely sees Jason as a person so he has no qualms about enforcing his perception of what would make Jason happy (based on precisely zero evidence) to the degree of denying Jason personal choice and autonomy. The only version of Jason he loves totally and unconditionally is the made up trad husband version in his head that looks suspiciously like Bruce's own almost-happily ever after if HE hadn't sabotaged his relationship with Talia for the sake of Batman.

Tim Seeley's Robins series was ass but one thing I think about all the time is Bruce's like dream sequence of what all the kids would be doing if they never met him and Jason is still a criminal. Like he's living a successful life and has a charity named after Catherine and he has no real reason to still be doing crime, Bruce just can't imagine Jason becoming a good person without Bruce's interference. Jason, who told him explicitly he only stole because he had to. Jason who was ready to stop a heist by himself when he thought Bruce wouldn't believe him. Jason, who was first handed a gun by Bruce himself.

Bruce truly believes the only two options for Jason are violent criminal or living the American Dream. There is no in between to him. He has no concept of nuance when it comes to Jason its crazy.

The pervading concept that Bruce is "letting" Jason operate or holding back on him at all is so funny to me. How do you come to this conclusion. He has killed Jason visibly on panel multiple times. Like more than the Joker. There is no evidence to support Bruce LETTING Jason have or do anything. Every inch Jason takes is clawed from Bruce's white knuckled grip. Jason didn't luck his way into running Gothams underground, he's a tactical genius who played Bruce like a fucking fiddle using an updated version of Bruce's own plan and methods because Jason is competent and intelligent. The only reason Bruce wasn't blown up in his car is because Jason misses his dad. The only leverage he has to control Jason is Jason's desperate desire to be loved. Which he has used at least 3 times in recent memory to harm or kill Jason actually!!

Notably, for the sake of this conversation, it doesn't really matter if you think Bruce's behavior towards Jason is in character. Their relationship is inherently antagonistic and they are both aggressors towards each other, no matter how you slice it. What matters is that in canon, the text itself, is very clear in saying that Bruce would rather murder Jason himself than allow him to continue operating as Red Hood or acting on his own moral code. This is a consistent message from the narrative. You don't have to agree with the narrative, but that doesn't change what it is. To say that Bruce lets Jason get away with anything, that he holds back on Jason at all, that he has ever given Jason an inch that Jason didn't fight for - is in direct opposition to the text. Too many people state this reworking of the characters as a fact, that of course Bruce must be allowing Jason to operate, because how could someone like Jason get anything over Batman?? When in fact the ONLY way Bruce has managed to stop Jason from doing anything he wants to do IS murder or severe bodily harm.

i think people need to realize more that bruce wayne is a complex character, and batman is not a good person especially when faced with regular folk

one of your recent posts made me remember that batman only affiliates with heroes/vigilantes if they're useful to his cause. in the case of ragman, batman was going after him criticizing his existence (for no reason, at the time the suit of rags wasn't as sentient and bloodthirsty until years later), until a large group of civilians gathered to protect ragman from the bat, after that batman "approved" his work

you can't look at me in the eyes and tell me batman wasn't using the fact that ragman was liked by the public for his own interests. ragman was never even seen as a hero or vigilante but as a protector, batman saw that and wanted some of that pie

and i'm only using ragman as example because at the time he was just a guy wearing a costume made out of rags operating in the slums of gotham, with other characters its a bit more obvious what batman can gain from attaching his own name to theirs (not the other way around, but he's got good pr so people would assume the others are using batman's name for their own gain)

I just saw excerpts from a comic the other day where the trinity are arguing about what to do about a betrayal by someone superman picked because Clark was giving memberships out to every self proclaimed hero and vigilante fighting to do good he came across, and while Diana was reasonably like "let's just be more discerning and put more thorough background checks in place" Bruce was adamant that they do thorough investigations into the whole league, including people who had been operating with them for years and have already proved themselves to be trustworthy. Clark brings up the obvious point about violations of privacy and Bruce doesn't care because the people around him are peices to be moved to achieve a goal first and teammates second.

This comes through especially in Tims birthday torment nexus comic where that mindset is exactly what Bruce is hoping to sow in Tim by creating distrust for his teammates. It's also what makes Dicks style of leadership different (read: better). Dick is still prone to imposing his view of what's best or morally right on the people around him, but at the end of the day he trusts his team wholeheartedly to have his back. You see this in the difference between Bruce's contingencies for his teammates (kept secret from the other members, relies on as few other people for help implementing as possible, has not given anyone on the team a contingency for himself) vs Dick's (everyone is aware that there are contingencies, every teammate has someone else's contingency based on their strengths and weaknesses, the Titans all trust each other not to abuse the power they have over each other because there is an equal distribution of power). It doesn't bear saying that this distinction is one of the many things that makes Nightwing a better leader than Batman, if not a better hero - both things Bruce himself has admitted readily. Something to be said here about Bruce's parenting style, but that's a bit off topic.

Batman is equally opportunistic, calculating, manipulative, and egotistical as his worst villains. They parallel each other - that's the point. All of his big Rogues are meant to hold a mirror up to some facet of Batman and show him the worst possible reality. His philosophy is equally built on the ends that justify the means. His only rule is thst he doesn't kill. Crippling, maiming, violations of personal autonomy, privacy, and the rights granted by the law Batman claims to uphold are all fair game if Bruce decides that those are acceptable sacrifices. There is some insane notion I often see that a character who doesn't kill can't be morally gray or ethically dubious, and its a thought process I'm incapable of understanding. Murder is not the only crime. Its not the worst crime, even, arguably. Its not the worst thing that can happen to you by a long shot. Bruce breaks the law and does objectively bad things for the sake of his ostensibly good cause because he believes its necessary and that is pretty much the definition of morally gray.

firm believer that all the writers that write bruce beating jason up are all bad writers. similar to how jason had a shit ton of mischaracterization as well, same for bruce. is he a good parent? no, far from it, but i refuse to believe that he'd beat jason up like that, like no, thats just shitty writing.

I think he would do anything to any one of his kids if he could justify it to himself. But I also think Scott Lobdell should burn in hell for his crimes. I don't even think the beating was the worst part of that comic I'd argue him using Jason's lack of support system and very new grief about Roy to manipulate Jason back into the family WHILE justifying the abuse both worse and very in character. That's very consistent 2000's and beyond Bruce behavior. He's also been putting his hands on kids since directly after Jason's death! Smacking the fuck out of Dick while blaming him for Jason's death, smacking the shit out of Tim because he was mad about his failing relationship with Selina, literally just every single interaction with Jason. There is no comic they are in together where Bruce doesn't use excessive force or some kind of emotional abuse on him. I fear it has been quite consistent across several dynamics with the people around him. Him punching Guy Gardener so hard he's knocked unconscious (WHILE HE'S ACTIVELY RECOVERING FROM BRAIN DAMAGE!!! WHICH IS FATAL!!) comes to mind also. Not all character development is positive, sometimes characters get worse. And Bruce has been consistently getting worse. This is the result of character flaws and status quos set up in the 70s that have exaggerated and evolved over time into Bruce just sort of being a shitty person and bad father. He loves his kids and also hurts them all the time. These things are not mutually exclusive.
