I’ve been trying to articulate this struggle for months now, because I keep seeing it play out in various fandoms in various ways, and as usual saltkettle figured out a key component of the whole issue in like five seconds: the idea of what you’re in the fandom for, and what you want to get out of it.
I don’t think this is the whole enchilada—creator-focused fans are not in any way synonymous with the purity/anti movement, and are often more fiercely opposed to them than anyone—but I do think the idea of hierarchal fanning, as it were, is something to explore further. Certainly the idea of BNFs within different fandoms is vastly different based on the norms of that fandom—one BNF might be a productive fanfic writer, while another might be someone who regularly interacts with creators. Both types of BNF impose a hierarchy, willingly or unconsciously, that can cause friction in the fandom (both of them can have their own mini-fandoms, even, in which almost all the activity is, oddly enough, creator-focused fanning).
Maybe the difference comes from who bestows that status—if it comes from the creator vs. if it comes from other fans. And then of course you have creators who admit to mixing amongst the hoi-polloi of the other-fans-focused fandom, which further complicates the issue.
Anyway, I welcome further thoughts on this, if anyone wants to chime in with different opinions/perspectives. I think there’s probably some extent to which other-fan-focused fans are imposing their values on creator-focused fans in turn, which I haven’t been sensitive to.
These box headed bitches already fuck with Mar and now they’re coming for you too? Do I need to get my Vaseline?
Girl.
I’m good. I don’t care about them.
They’re nobody.

Goooooooahhhh!
Is that you?// I didn’t know that not jumping up and down because he has on a wedding ring made you a hater
Never said that. Please use reading comprehension.
And stop playing in my inbox.
I’m not going to get into a debate or explain shit because I said what I said.
And I say what I want.
Find someone else to play with.
Don’t like what I said? Come off anon, say it with your chest and then block me back.
I dare you.
Won’t come off anon?
It’s because you’re embarrassed.
Come off anon or move the fuck along.
That’s what I thought.
I see we’re playing around on anon again.
You amuse me.
Just want you to know that I miss your writing.
It’s worth it.
But I understand that this fandom can be discouraging right about now.
Thank you Nonnie. 🥹
Everyday I see some new and interesting fuckery.
And I can’t seem to look away from the train wreck.
Things have changed.
Maybe it’s me.
