Giacomo informa il padre delle sue condizioni di salute riguardanti la sindrome del colon irritabile (ai suoi tempi chiamata "riscaldamento d'intestini"), collegata alla malattia reumatica autoimmune su base genetica di cui probabilmente soffriva (la spondilite anchilopoietica giovanile): "(…) le dico con verità ch’io vo migliorando di giorno in giorno sensibilmente, benché lentissimamente. Ma il Medico, ed altri che hanno patito di questo medesimo male, mi dicono che la lentezza del guarire è una sua qualità ordinaria, tanto più non usando certi rimedi forti, che il medico voleva porre in opera a ogni patto, come sanguigne o mignatte al sedere, e che io non ho voluti. Intanto vo passeggiando ogni giorno anche lungamente (…)" (Giacomo al Signor padre conte Monaldo, da Bologna, dicembre 1825)

Quando usavo parlare scherzosamente con il suo fantasma (nella cui esistenza non credevo), un giorno gli chiesi quale fosse la parte del suo corpo che gli piacesse di più, e lui mi rispose, con un certo orgoglio: "Le gambe e il sedere". Mi fece capire che teneva alla forma di queste sue parti che esercitava con passeggiate, e che gli erano valse anche gli sguardi di alcuni uomini. "In che senso?" Chiesi, curiosa su quest'ultimo punto. "Che qualche uomo, libero per il suo mestiere di avere contatto con i corpi, ci ha provato". Io sorrisi, pensando a una fanfaronata di dubbio gusto non attribuibile a Leopardi, ma alla mia immaginazione corrotta. Poi, qualche mese dopo, lessi queste righe, ed ebbi un sussulto.
