How to stop ‘not writing’

A big thank you to @recollected-melodies​ for checking in with me about how my “non-writing” is going. 

Fiction-wise, it is not getting out of my head, but ideas are still being explored, mostly before I pass out at night.  Non-fiction-wise, I started a doctoral program, and it is currently getting all my writing juices. And all my writing avoidance time.

Today, however, I read a wonderfully clear description of one writer’s writing process that makes me feel better about my own non-writing process.

I particularly like this part:  “ Anyhow, I committed to this endeavor, and spent a couple hours a day for, oh, four or five days, staring at the screen and playing lots of solitaire, which was actually promising.  Eventually, I got bored with losing against the House, and started to write. Mind you, I never have known “how” I write — I just sit down at the keyboard and make words until I have a story. Not an efficient method, but mine own. ”   

Sharon Lee goes on to describe writing 100 or 250 words in a session until something ‘clicked’ and then suddenly she had written another 1000 words. 

She and her husband Steve Miller actually live on the income from their writing [here’s her publications list], but she is recovering from over a year’s worth of health problems and on/off depression and ‘rebooting’ her writing self. Sound familiar to anyone?   

So again, to beat a familiar drum others have already beaten, to write, one must actually put pen to paper, fingers to keys, or voice to text-to-speech software and “make words happen.” Even if it takes some “paper or screen-staring time” to make it happen.

Vial vs. Vile

Correct:

She handed him a vial of blood. (noun-small container)

The vile demon grinned horribly. (Adj.- nasty/despicable)

Incorrect:

She handed him a vile of blood. (No such noun)

Possible, but less likely:

The vial demon grinned horribly (demon of a tiny space?)
