If Dante was thankful for one thing, it was the connection with the shadows. While he had no control over them, he could tell when they rippled, when something was following him.

“You would be best to avoid such needless tactics.” His voice cut through the silence sharply. “If you want to speak with me, face me. If you want a fight, go elsewhere.”

“Hey. Hey. No no no. Yer doin’ that thing again. Th’ one where ya act like a turtle an’ stick yer head in yer shell. I’m not gonna pretend I didn’t see ya actin’ so gloomy.” Wilford even folded his arms to emphasise this.

"MARION!" So much for a peaceful evening for the district attorney. In barges William with a grin on his face. "You're not going to believe this. Damien is gone! He actually went home early for once! I'm gonna have to eat my hat now!"

Wilford looked suspicious at how flat and automatic the answer was. He wasn’t looking for some boost in pride. Fans was clearly mocking him. No wonder they got along with Dark so well! This was only amplified when Fans began laughing at him.

“Hey! That ain’t a joke-” he started, before Fans interrupted with an answer that only confused Wilford. The pair didn’t get along? That was weird. They acted like a married couple. But as he let the words sink in, confusion spread.

“Wait. Th’ void? You some parta Dark?”

This feeling felt very nice, Wilford realised the more the foggy effect of sleep faded. Everyone he worked with generally kept to themselves, which was fine, but it made this moment special.

But then, Fans began speaking. He nearly blew his own cover by arguing his case, though he bit his tongue at the last second. This, surprisingly, turned out to be a good thing, as Fans revealed their intentions to protect him. But why would they want to do that? Maybe if he kept quiet he might learn more.

It had been a week since Dark made the announcement of changing his name to Dante, essentially confirming the entity he was before was dead, in a sense. While the work was never-ending, he had noticed how Fans was keeping their distance. Not that he blamed them. Dante looked more like Damien than Dark did, but he was not the Mayor. They’d never have their days together where Damien would take control and they would pretend nothing ever happened; nor would Fans ever see that ghostly figure appear in their office. Instead, Dante himself entered.

“Fans, we need to address this issue. It is impossible to maintain a decent working relationship if you keep avoiding me.” By staying by the door, the entity hoped he could block Fans and sort this matter out.
