Phantasex: figurations that do not occur in real people/meatspace; bodies that can only exist in fantasy; specifically body plans that are not physically viable/possible.

A take-off on “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Findlay’s collaborations are really fascinating because you can usually see the contrast between co-directors when a sex scene starts. Cecil Howard’s trademark red-light scene kicks in (something he’d perfect in Scoundrels) and the film does indeed go to Bernard’s fantasy land; same with the later circus sequence. There’s a neat scene between Terri Hall and Jeffrey Hurst involving a piano, and I assume Findlay herself is playing the music on the soundtrack. There’s a scene that reminds me of Chris Marker’s La jetée, which would have been on Findlay’s radar. But overall it’s a rather torrid affair. You don’t watch anything directed by Roberta Findlay to see people enjoying sex; you see it because people are tormented by it.
