In the year 2016, a mentally ill child fell into the Underground and, after killing off a large majority monsterkind for fun, had their soul stolen by a mysterious (ghost?) entity. They made an unwilling deal with this entity, and by these terms, they must repeat their entire experience in the Underground without taking a single life, otherwise they will never have their soul returned to them.
The only problem is… they’re not the only human in the Underground this time.
(This comic contains numerous spoilers of the original game. In order to completely understand the story, it’s important that you are familiar with the structure and full story of Undertale.)
※ “Can I ask the characters questions?” Yes. However, the interactive part will not affect the story itself.
※ “Can I draw fanart or write a fanfic about the comic?” You don’t even need to ask this–just do it! Be sure to mention @greyscale-comic or @onebizarrekai so I can see it! For the record, though–and I really shouldn’t have to say this, due to the fact that the main characters are kids–NSFW is not permitted, so please don’t make it.
※ “Can I make a translation?” Definitely! Just be sure to let me know beforehand and to credit properly. As long as you’re not making money off it, we’re all good.
※ “Can I make a dub of this?” Go ahead! (Same rules apply as for translations.)
※ “When does this comic usually update?” I’ve been trying to update on Sundays, but I’ve been falling short as of late due to real life shenanigans, so I’ve stepped back and I just say it updates weekly. I’m in a bit of a rough spot with this comic because I have other projects with more prominent audiences that I also need to work on, but I’ve been trying my best.
※ “Can I repost–” Please don’t. Redistribution is limited to credited translations and dubs. Even if you credit the repost, it is not permitted under any circumstance.
※ “Can I roleplay as one of the characters?” At this time, you may not publicly roleplay as them. I don’t think anyone aside from me knows enough about them.
※ Mt. Ebott is located in southern California in Greyscale, next to a fictional city called Las Flores.
※ Xaki, Alix and Chara’s genders are unspecified. While Xaki is on the nonbinary spectrum, and Chara couldn’t care less about gender, it doesn’t get much more specific than that, at least at this point in time, considering their ages. They/them pronouns are the most appropriate for all three of them. If you are translating and your language does not have common neutral pronouns, it would be okay to use masculine pronouns, but only for a lack of anything better to use.
When someone uses gendered pronouns in spite of me constantly using neutral pronouns for them all inside and outside the comic, it sends me the message that they either don’t have a whole lot of respect in that regard or aren’t exactly observant.
※ Everything takes place earlier in Greyscale than in Undertale. Rather than Chara falling down in 201X, that’s when Xaki fell down (2016, to be specific).
※ Xaki’s birthday is February 22nd, while Alix’s is June 20th, and both are twelve years old. As for their heights, Xaki stands at 5′3 (160 cm) and Alix is 4′11 (150 cm). As a play on Chara’s connection to the number 9, Chara’s birthday is on September 9th (inspired by caretaker-au), and they… float at 5′0 (152 cm).
※ Greyscale could be considered an alternate timeline or an alternate universe.
※ Due to the demands of school and real life, this comic occasionally takes breaks (especially during show weeks, since I’m a music performance student), albeit I try to update it as consistently as I can.
I’m Ky (or Kai), a college student who is studying music. In my free time, I love to draw comics, write stories and play video games, and Greyscale is the culmination of that! My main blog is @onebizarrekai, where you can see the other things I’ve been creating if you’re interested and witness all of the other shenanigans that I happen to get myself into on a regular basis.
