thomas takes each show of affection, no matter how minor, no matter how platonic, with the same shock as a swift hit. edward is warm and welcome against him; to communicate the latter, he does as he’s done since they met, takes a risk, and returns the touch.

he’s tilted into him before he knows it. he places a hand beyond and behind the man to steady himself and tips happily in, revels in the tickle that curly head of hair provides his cheek.

         ‘ thank you. ’ a brief pause, then— ‘ edward. ’

 the  wing  was  quiet  now  .  they  had  always  quick  visitors  ,  but  time  seemed  to  pass  differently  for  matthew  now  that  he  could  only  sleep  and  wallow  in  his  pain               or  lack  of  it  .  in  all  honesty  ,  he  still  couldn’t  feel  anything  beneath  his  waist  .  and  so  he  passed  the  time  doing  other  things  ,  like  conversing  with  whoever  it  happened  to  be  beside  his  bed  ,  since  they  had  taken  the  dividing  curtains  from  round  his  bed  .  he’d  never  spoken  to  the  man  next  to  him  ,  though  he  knew  his  name  was  edward  ,  and  knew  thomas  often  came  to  visit  ,  and  knew  he  suffered  from  loss  of  vision  .  it  was  quite  easy  to  mind  the  business  of  others  here  ,  no  matter  how  hard  he  tried  not  to  .  but  he  knew  edward  was  awake  now  ,  and  wanted  to  speak  ,  if  only  to  ward  away  the  stillness  .            ❝      did  i  hear  tell  your  name  was  edward  ?      ❞
