#ActOnFashion NOW! Anna Kelles, Alessandra Biaggi and New Standard Institute’s #FashionAct is a proposed piece of legislation that needs support to get passed to impart the most common sense, basic regulations on an industry that rampantly disregards people, and planet. I believe that New York State and the fashion industry will change the world for the better and The Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act is a huge first step. The fashion industry touches everyone, the supply chains wrap many times around the world and the problems are large, but that means improvements will be immediately impactful, ONCE ENFORCED. The fashion industry generated $300 billion globally in 2020. But the industry at large is scarcely regulated and often complicit in contributing to atrocities like air and water pollution, harmful chemical/pesticide use, waste, microplastics in the ocean, human trafficking, exploitation, racism, sexism, and underrepresentation. This bill would require that corporations make clear strides towards their stated targets or face significant fines. Any money collected from those fines would go towards a community fund focused on promoting sustainability and good labor practices.
