US C Grumman TF-9J Cougar of Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 13 who used Cougar as fast FAC aircraft until being replaced by Douglas TA-4F Skyhawk. This was the only combat use of the Cougar which was in service from 1952 to 1974.

The F-100F is a two-seat variant that played a pivotal role as a “Fast FAC” or Misty FAC (forward air controller) during the Vietnam War. It undertook perilous low-level missions to identify targets for other fighter-bombers, reconnaissance, and search and rescue (SAR) operations. Notably, it was the first aircraft to serve in the “Wild Weasel” SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) missions. The “Hun” completed over 360,000 combat sorties throughout the Vietnam War until operations ceased in 1971.

Freedom Bird

45 years ago, this week in  April, I boarded a “Freedom Bird” heading home from Thailand after a year-long remote combat tour.

It was a year filled with many things:  honing my flying skills as a backseater in the F4, learning to deal with a whole new world, and being away from my wife —  being  gone from her for a whole year was a very difficult thing to do.
