2014 100 Mile of Nowhere Recap: Burned Hands and Change of Plans
2014 #100MileofNowhere Recap: Burned Hands and Change of Plans #ridebikes #makeadventure
The Fatcyclist.com 100 Miles of Nowhere is a “must do” event for me every year. I’m convinced that I love the reaction of people when they realize I am riding a really long distance in ridiculously short laps. Yes friends, normally predictable John is slightly unhinged.
The premise of the 100MoN is something akin to a combination of those “choose your adventure” video games we played on Apple IIe…

Fat Cyclist shot this video of Rebecca "The Queen of Pain" Rusch doing a clinic on top of Columbine. This year, Reba is putting aside going for the win to push "The Hammer" (Fatty's wife) to get her best result yet. Leadville Traill 100 coming atcha next weekend. I love clinic videos like this. Any tips for mountain biking are appreciated. :)
In this episode, Evelyn Stevens talks about her experience with World Bicycle Relief's "Africa Rides", a trip to Zambia that shows donors the impact the Buffalo bike has on lives. We had an hour long chat about the trip while flipping through Jason's amazing photos, and it reaffirmed my love for WBR - it really is such an amazing initiative and organization. I suggest you go to their site and enhance your knowledge of all they do and the impact mobilization has on lives.
It's inspired me so much (and knowing WBR is doing $ for $ donor matching until Dec 31), I've decided to 'gift' donations to/from my family instead of giving them physical things wrapped in festive paper this year. :)
If you want to do the same ($134 is one buffalo bike, so one becomes two with the donor match), I suggest you donate via Fat Cyclist's Grand Slam for Zambia: The Power of 5 donation page. Why? Because Fatty is a good egg with a donation goal and I want to help him get there. And you might win something while you're at it, if you're into that kind of thing. :)
Happy holidays!

The Pleasure of Pastries
The smell of a freshly baked croissant permeating the morning air in Paris. A warm cookie shared during movie night. The anticipation of dessert after a satisfying meal. Apple pie on the 4th of July. A welcome snack break during a long work day. Here at Musette, we believe in the power of, and the pleasure in, pastries.
Whether running or riding, we look forward to our sweet treats. We don’t want something overpowering or heavy like mom’s pie or that buttery Parisian croissant (there’s a time and place for everything), but we do want a treat to keep us going and a reward for all that effort. And while we’ve all succumbed to the quick and easy caloric boost that packaged bars and goo provide, if we’re going to eat, we want to make it count. We want real food! And we like to think we’re not alone. Behold a favorite quote from a recent interview by one of our favorite people, Fat Cyclist, and professional cyclist, Levi Leipheimer:
Fatty: What’s your food of choice during a stage race?
Levi: It’s got to be a mixture of things so you don’t get tired of just one thing. Gels and bars, obviously. But bananas are good, or cake. Anyway, they call them cakes in Europe but they’re really pastries - stuff from the bakery. They are totally high-fat, but they digest well.
We knew we loved Levi for a reason. And we are determined to balance the taste of the cakes and pastries we love from the streets of Europe with more whole wheat, protein and fiber and less sugar and fat. Because we want the best of both worlds, and we’re convinced we can have it.
What do you eat when exercising and training? Do you wish you could savor your chance to ingest some energizing calories more? Crave something sweet? We’d love to hear from you.
