“What on earth do you want a dog for? You’ll get bored of it after a week and then I’ll have to listen to your mother whining about how she’s the only one that looks after it.”
“Oh.” Well, that was that, wasn’t it? Mycroft was not about to question his father on this. After all, he knew best, right? And if he thought that the boy would get bored of a dog then he was probably right - even if Mycroft didn’t quite think so himself.
The truth was, he’d read a book with a dog in and had grown rather fond of the idea of one. It seemed nice to have a loyal friend who couldn’t actually talk to you so they couldn’t be boring. The idea wasn’t going to leave his head simply because the other told him no, but he supposed that he would have to try and just forget about it now.
But, maybe... “What about a cat then?”
