The Legacy of Favela Painting as an interactive trilogy

We created 3 interactive books to showcase the legacy that Favela Painting has on People, Community and Public space.

The People book, an audio memory book that tells stories through objects. The Community book, a sound puzzle to experience community building, The Public space book, a 360-look-book.

The project was showcased at Aqua Art Miami on December 2 - 4.

Tea and Conversations

Vitor: “What a week guys!” Ivana: “I was laser cutting. And then laser cutting. And some laser cutting.”

Ben: “I had fish and chips on Friday.”

Triin: We visited the former prison, currently a refugee center in Amsterdam. And painted together with refugees. And had special tea from Afghanistan.”

Vitor: “That was so sweet and good.”

Ben: “Some soldering and audio editing was definitely made.”

Frank: “We actually managed to prototype three interactive books for Favela Painting project.”

Ivana: “I was laser cutting.”

Sofia: “Laser cutting is so Tron. I made some fried chicken.”

Vitor: “We also presented our De Ceuvel project to all of our partners. And organized a workshop with them.”

Luna the dog: “That was so long and boring.”

Frank: “Some hardcore 3D modeling. Triin had a birthday. Next morning was hardcore.”

Ivana: “Vitor made a African-Brazilian dance ritual with us. I think we are in a cult now. Maybe? I don’t know.”

Favela Painting

This week, we’re going hardcore on concept for our amazing partner Favela Painting. Lots of ideas and we’re trying to visualize and make those ideas tangible. 

John Boiler and Matt Jarvis, the founders of 72andSunny, flew in from the United States and tried to butt activate our Sunspot! 

We visited the Bijlmer Bajes again to look for new stories and check the place where we’re going to paint next week. Meanwhile, we’re making our window shining for the coming winter night!

Today we visited favela Santa Marta, one of the most iconic and accessible favelas in Rio. The painting is a project by Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhas and Dre Urhahn. See more of their project: www.favelapainting.com

Colorful neighbourhoods

Praça Cantão, Communidade Da Santa Marta, Rio De Janeiro

Using a flexible concept of colourful rays which can easily be expanded, we made a design for the houses around the square and part of the street, including the local Sambaschool. A group of local inhabitants where instructed by trainers from TintasCoral as part of the project "Tudo de Cor para Santa Marta." They where taught everything from different types of paint to safety measures about working on scaffolding. As every wall, every house needs another solution, the painters learn to work with all kinds of material. During the hard month of work they received an education as well as a paycheck. The final result was a huge artwork spanning over 34 houses. It's our goal to attract enough funds to return to Rio later this year to continue working on the project, as our dream has always been to paint an entire hillside favela. This project Back to Rio could turn the community into one of the greatest community driven artworks of our time.

Rio Cruzeiro

Our second large painting in Vila Cruzeiro was finished in 2008. It was situated on a massive concrete structure, built to protect the hill from mudslides during the rainy season. It was painted together with local youth, who learned a craft, while earning money at the same time. The traditional japanese design was made by master tattooist Rob Admiraal. After 8 months of painting, enduring long periods of rain, shootings and police occupation, the 2000m2 artwork was finally finished!
