It was an evening far too bright for the lack of light in her eyes; as if the sun decided to leave footprints against the canopy of trees within the Hallowed Oak. Spring must be coming, then. Collette anticipated the blossoming of flowers and the gorgeous after-sky of tinted purples and pinks, but that only meant her nights were shorter. The spring and summer months were a weak link in her chain of commands at De la Nuit; much needed to get done, much needed to be represented faster and with a haste that could exhaust even a vampiress as ageless as Collette.
But springtimes hadn't been the same in Athoria, not without Michael to share her walks in the gardens as they admired the freshly bloomed corpses of buds and pedals. Without Michael she ventured by herself through those meadows, tickling the stems of her flowers and pruning them as gingerly as a mother would bathe her child.
She was thinking about him again, but hadn't she always? The Viking Battle fifty years ago had been a catastrophic blemish in Athorian history. By the time De la Nuit had crossed the country to Night Haven, it had been too late.
Michael was gone.
Travels to Night Haven were routine and often. Without Michael tending to Thirst over the decades, Collette made it a point to visit. This was both for her own mental stability of loosing the man she loved and to maintain the order of his only standing material legacy. She would be damned if Gage or others attempted selfishly to make Thirst into something it was not. But she also came to feel him and smell him, to miss him. She came to sit in his study and read.
She came to remember.
