💭 A reflection/opinion on OA's openness (part 1/4), based solely on what we have seen in the episodes and a purely personal perspective.
[ 1x07 ]
This is practically the beginning of Maggie and OA's collaboration, and they are just learning to understand each other. It's evident that OA prefers to maintain a distance through his mask of indifference. In his perception, being open and vulnerable means appearing weak, which is something he cannot afford. Maggie stops him and makes it clear that what she needs is honesty. As partners, they must be able to read each other, understand each other with just a glance - it's a necessity, a skill that will save their lives. Maggie doesn't need him to say everything's fine; she doesn't need false peace; she needs reality. If they lie to each other, they will be doomed. And he accepts it; he doesn't stop her, and he no longer denies that he's not fine; he's honest.
It's also important to understand that being honest and pouring out your soul are two different things. As a partner, OA should be honest with her, but he doesn't have to tell her everything. And Maggie adds, "But if you ever need to talk…" - this is a personal offer, outside of work. Being honest is a condition. However, talking to her and opening up to her is a personal offer. She doesn't insist or demand it. She simply makes it clear that she's willing to listen. She provides (creates) him with a safe space for his vulnerability, if he wants it. She leaves, but she leaves the door open for him, giving him a choice.
Next, we see that what happened and how it resonates with his military past weighs heavily on him and won't let go. We also see how difficult it is for him to talk about it, even though he needs to. It's not just a difficult topic to discuss, but it's also challenging for him to make the decision to open up. He not only needs to talk about it, but it's important who he does it with. The fact that he comes to Maggie shows that he feels she is the right person for him to do so. This is a moment of unity and development, not only as work partners, but also as personal relationships. It is a manifestation of trust beyond the boundaries of work.
[ 2x01 ]
In this episode, we see OA once again grappling with how the case resonates deeply with his personal feelings. However, despite his closed-off nature, he simply comes to a place where he knows he can be open and vulnerable without hiding the depth of his emotions. He knows that with her, he can be fully himself, honest without reservation, and not face judgment or rejection. With her, he can be completely vulnerable without feeling weak in that.
___
For example, in [ 4x20 ], OA's partner is Nina, who replaces Maggie while she's in rehab after being poisoned. They work on a case where OA encounters a "ghost from the past". Nina worries that OA is being subjective and going down the wrong path, questioning his every decision. She understands that this is a personal matter; he is extremely emotionally connected (+ what recently happened in the lab with Maggie), and this is Nina's way of insuring him. OA, however, remains true to his intuition and turns out to be right. In the end, Nina apologizes for not believing him, but OA understands her. Nina says that "stress is a tricky thing" and "it hides for years and years, and one day it'll just bite you in the ass". OA agrees with her. In the end, Nina says, "I'm always here if you need to talk, okay?". He thanks her, "I appreciate that", but doesn't take her up on her offer. He goes to a psychologist. Nina is his partner; he is honest with her, but she is not the person he is ready to pour out his soul to. ___
