Fire emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia – The science of a Remake.
Not weapon triangle? Well that makes sense, after all, the only axe wielders in the original game were the brigands, and if we keep the weapon triangle it would make the game to easy and the lances a game-breaking weapon, that was the best decision of course…or maybe, and just maybe, why not just, you know, rebalance the game and add fucking axe wilders.
So you are telling me that the logical choose between remove a core element of the franchise since the sixth installment (and an important element in the complexity of the gameplay) or re-structure all the gameplay, map design, enemies, allies, etc. that allow to maintain the same triangle we choose the first.
Of course that is the logical answer, after all, if we choose this we’ll keep faithful to the game and also we’ll be choosing the cheapest and easiest option…Oh...OHHHHHHHH.
SHIT
As you can guess by now this mini-rant is not about the remove of the weapon triangle but the philosophy of why it has to be removed and why that concerns me.
Look Gaiden had great ideas but the execution of them wasn’t the greatest, this is why I think that I think a “Remake” would be great for the game as a chance to correct what it is a pretty broken game, but the problem that I’m seeing is that we aren’t gonna get a ”Remake”, what we’ll get is a glorify HD port, that looks pretty, it have a lot of new colors and doesn’t have obvious pandering elements of Awakening and Fates but the problem is that behind all of that we may be getting the same broken game, just in HD.
And what’s next, what will happen when, if the Echoes subseries is a success, we reach the Gba titles, you can fix a lot of thing in those games but from a visual aspect you don’t have almost anything to do here because the games still look fantastic.
And I think that this is the point here, the actual perception of what is remake in the community, nostalgia, pretty graphics, smother interfaces and not the possibilities for something new, to use the learned in past titles to build something even better…and it just suck because just recently we have a taste of what a Remake should look in “Another Metroid 2 Remake”.
This is a game that steps in the bases of a good game by its time and elevates it to heights that nobody was expecting .
A new art design, new power ups, new zones, new enemies and bosses, a totally new perspective on the SRR 388 and its people before the Metroids and thousands of other touches in the re-design of the map.
This This is a fan game, yes, but AM2R has set the standard by which a videogame Remakes needs to be judged, not the easiest and cheapest way to make an old game playable for today standards, but a passion project that Pays homage fixes and expands the ideas of the original.
And that is all, just a little reflection of an issue that I really need to get out of my system…so to wait now, to wait and hope…
