Daniel Johnston’s collaborative effort with Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous didn’t hit the spot all the way through, but its moments that combined classic Johnston songwriting with Linkous space-slacker bliss make it a worthy listen. Some have cited this as a classic case of overproduction, but I disagree. The best parts here fully utilise all of that production – and, as a whole, Fear Yourself is probably my favourite post-1990 Johnston release.
