Some random thoughts as another film nears the end of principal photography
Sometimes when working on set, you have moments where you can talk and relax in-between set ups (which at times can be lengthy).
The other day I was speaking with one of the electricians and she brought up a a point that I actually have heard on several occasions lately, she hasn't seen any of the films that she worked on.
I nearly had to pick up my jaw from the floor when I heard her say that. But when you come to think of it, this makes sense. First off, I probably shouldn't talk because I see more movies than your average movie goer. But secondly, grip, electrical, and camera departments are often working on many projects throughout the year so free time is limited. I am sure that when free time is granted, those people would much rather spend free time with family and friends then to see a movie in the theater or a rental.
But perhaps also this is a reality of the business for those who work on films. It is far from glamorous as one might imagine or think. The days usually start early (think 6 or 7am) then you work for 6 hours until lunch, then typically you would wrap 6 hours from lunch. So you are looking at a 12 hour day at the minimum. But a 12 hour day actually might be welcome at times because for many departments the day will start even earlier, especially for the transportation department (they are involved with all moving of the working trucks, cast/crew pick-ups, ect.) and locations department. So you are looking at sometimes a 16-17 hour work day. Depending on budget size, you could be also looking at 6 day work weeks, which leaves Sunday as the only day off of the week, when most business are closed.
I am not exactly sure what I am trying to say with this post but I suppose it is that people who work on films should be given the time to view what they have worked on so they can take pride in their accomplishments. I know that the 12 hour work day is the norm but I think for the safety of and well being of crew members, who sometimes have to work with dangerous equipment or in charge of driving people all hours of the day, should be well rested each day. While working on a film is work and often it is hard work, it should also be fun and enjoyable. If it becomes 16 hours of work per day, it can sometimes become a chore and that I think totally defeats the overall moral.
But we do it because we love the work, the craft. But its not worth going to an early grave over.
