Kneeling beside the lake, Val scrubbed and scrubbed at her hands. There had been blood on them; or maybe there hadn’t. She wasn’t sure anymore. She remembered seeing the blood, but how long ago had that been? Minutes or months? She wasn’t sure her hands could ever be clean again.

She could’ve been there for hours if not for the young girl’s voice startling her from behind. It stopped her in her tracks. The girl didn’t need to see this, didn’t need to know about death. She wiped the water off her hands onto her dress.

“Oh- Nothing. It’s late, my dear… What’s keeping you awake?”

THIS  GIRL  ISN’T  HUMAN.  but---god,  she  isn’t  a  demon,  either,  is  she?  dante’s  skull  feels  like  someones  taken  a  jackhammer  to  the  crack  in  the  back  and  was  thrusting  up  into  the  greymatter  of  his  brain,  desperate  to  pop  him  open  and  see  what  he  was  made  of,  are  you  going  to  hurt  me?  he  sees  white,  blinding  lights,  and  smells  saline--

and  he’s  crouched  so  close  to  the  ground,  his  knees  almost  scrape  the  finely  cut  limestone.  the  red  of  his  jacket  pools  around  him  like  a  shade  of  brassy  blood.   ‘  hey---it’s  okay.  it’s  okay.  i’m  not  going  to  hurt  you.  ‘   it’s  been  a  while  since  he’s  managed  to  pull  up  this  level  of  emotional  vulnerability  without  reservation,  scarred  deeply  to  his  softened  center  by  events  some  six-seven  years  in  the  past.  

she  had  to  see  it,  see  the  truth.  his  fingers  blacken  to  sharp  needles,  scales  encrusting  from  knuckle  to  mid  arm,  not  quite  reaching  his  elbow.  his  veins  pulse  red  to  the  surface  of  his  leathery  hide.  ‘  see.  i’m  different.  i’m  not  like  you  ..  but  i’m  not  like  them.  ‘
