Colette had only known true nerves a number of times in her life. Her first televised performance, that was a huge one. The moments before she’d won her first grammy, another moment where her nerves were shot. When she saw those blue stripes on that pregnancy test, she damn near passed out. Signing those divorce papers were one of the worse moments where nerves had taken her over and now, as she stood in those stunning wedding dress... those nerves had made their long awaited returned.
But she wasn’t nervous in the way that she probably should have been. Her mind wasn’t racing, making her contemplate all the ways that this day could be ruined. Because even if something didn’t go according to plan, which she was sure would happen regardless of how often they’d all worked on the itinerary... she was marrying the man that she loved. She knew regardless of what happened, that was going to happen.
It’d taken them a while to come to the realization that they were the end all for each other. Colette had already been in love with Leo and her career was on the up and up while Devon was fighting his demons and coming out of the darkness that engulfed his life. But things eventually changed for the two of them, bringing them closer once again. Close enough that resulted the birth of their first born, Alejandro Molina. Something that’d been a surprise for the two of them, but despite the surprise they’d stuck by each other’s side and brought this incredible man into the world.
They’d done such a great job that they’d soon after brought in three more children. Not just that but Devon happily accepted her son from her precious marriage, Anthony and treated him as he’d been his very own child. Just like she’d happily accepted Isaac, Devon’s best friend’s son into the fold into their family and treated him as great... actually no, better than her own children as she simply adored that boy.
And now, her family was all here, standing at that altar to witness the union between the man that’d already been her everything and herself. Her parents stood by her side, showering her with compliments. Both because they were warranted but because her parents knew her too well. Nothing fought off those nerves in Colette Mendez- well soon to be Molina like some well timed compliments.
Her father asked her if she was ready, which was followed with a nod from her. Her mother smiled up at her as she took a hold of her hand. She was more than ready. The music began as they made their way to the aisle. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment. She had nothing to be nervous about, at the end of this aisle would be the love of her life. Her eyes opened and she, along with her parents made her way out to the aisle.
As she made her way down the aisle, she caught sight of her favorite people. There was Leo and Hailey. They not only looked good but they looked so happy. She shot a wink in Leo’s direction before continuing her way down. Then there was Day and Ray, the spokespeople for the perfect marriage. They’d gotten married before any of them but look at them, still as happy as they’d been when they’d first gotten married. On their lap, the epitome of their love, Baby Garcia. Looking as adorable as always. Then there was Monty sitting besides Keegan Dolsen and were they hand in hand? She would have to ask him about that later. Jade, oh her best friend Jade and her always handsome husband, Casey who was cheering her on in a not so silent way... and she loved her for it. Layla, Tallulah, Mariela, Jordan, Sage, and Odessa with Chase there in spirit. Jarrah as well, Lincoln along with Kid, Play, Bra and their better halfs, Siobhan, Soren and Dylan. Everyone who was everyone in attendance that day.
But the people who mattered stood in front of her. Her children, Luka and her soon to be husband. She hugged her parents, thanking them with kisses to their cheeks. She loved them so much. ‘Okay’ she told herself as she made her way up the steps to meet Devon at the altar. He took her hands in his, her thumbs running against the back of his hands as Mr. Shapiro spoke. The smile on her face only growing as she look at him, he was so handsome. Just as handsome as he’d been when they were younger, maybe even more so. She mouthed ‘I love you’ to him until it came time for the vows.
Now, she definitely wasn’t her son, Anthony and she didn’t have his way with words but she would try her best. “Devon Molina, oh Devon Molina. Where can I start with you? You’ve made me feel just about every emotion one can feel but I’m pretty sure that only speaks to how much you mean to me. No one can make you feel as much as you’ve made me feel if they didn’t care for them. And I care for you, so much. I always have. Since we’d met at 19 to right at this moment, you’ve always mattered to me and you always will matter to me. You’re not only the father of my children and now my soon to be husband, but you’re the man who’s saved me. In so many ways,” She said, interviewing her fingers. “I love you. Ahora y Siempere.”
This is probably not the best time to get hugged, given my hands are covered in soil from a repotting project I shouldn't have left for 30 minutes before Emma and the kids dropped by, but it's too late to go back now, so I just wrap my arms around him, trying to keep my hands off his white tee.
"My God, have you grown? You look like a giant now."
'doctor oliver, since you're with uncle manny, do i call you uncle oliver, or do i call you uncle doctor oliver? cause you're a doctor and my mum tells me to call people their titles and their names. so you'd be doctor oliver." ( devon has important questions )
"Your mom's right about using titles, but we're family now."
"You can just call me Oliver--Or Uncle Oliver, if you want."
"here, uncle oliver." devon is going to hand him a dish of ice cream that he added sprinkles to and even a cherry with some chocolate sauce! "i'm sorry i was being rude about my ice cream when you didn't have any."
I probably shouldn't have that, but Devon seems to have prepared the bowl with such apologetic care that I can't refuse it. Plus, it looks like it's chocolate. How could I say no to chocolate ice cream?
"That's alright, Devon."
I scoop up a spoonful and eat it, then use the same spoon to point at him.
"uncle oliver! i got you something!" he had been sitting with manny for some time now while waiting for the doctor to get home, showing his uncle the book he got after giving manny a coloring book that the older man was very pleased with. all while jeremy played with louie and emma made dinner for them all. when the door opened and oliver walked in, devon got up and took the book back from manny to instead run up to the older man. a grin on his lips as he held it out to him. "i got you this at the book fair!"
"Devon, this is amazing!"
It's a periodic table book. I flip through a few pages, marveling at the colorful illustrations. Sure, I'm exhausted and my feet hurt, but right now? Right now, I'm just happy.
"You remembered how much I love this stuff, huh?"
I glance over at Manny, who's watching us with a soft smile. I return it, my own smile widening as I look back at Devon.
"I love it. Thank you so much."
I pull him into a hug by the shoulders, the book held in my other hand.
