Crimlaw TAE Featured Speaker: Justice Paul Newby, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice

We have the best speakers. For example, Justice Paul Newby spoke with us via Facetime from North Carolina. He shared his experience as an American supreme court judge. People were impressed (me, included).

A big difference between the U.S. and German criminal justice system is the role of judges. In the U.S., judges make law (common law) and, in the Notorious RGB’s case, make America’s culture great (period). However, many judges in America are politicians, meaning they are elected.

In Germany, not so much. 

I was happy when a TAE student said, “I really want to be a judge after my state exams (German lawyer exam).” 

"That’s mighty ambitious. I didn’t know you were interested in politics,” I stated. I’m always impressed by the motivation these students have shown. 

“No!” she laughed. I imagine she added “you silly woman” in her mind. “We can be hired as a judge after passing the exams...if you have a good score.” 

Mind blown.

So, it turns out that judges are like a regular job in Germany. It’s not as political as the U.S.A. Like Justice Newby, many judges in America are elected by the people or appointed by politicians. It tends to cause controversy.

Overall, being a judge is a very unique American experience. I am happy that Crimlaw TAE got to speak with a great judge like Paul Newby. A big thanks to him.
