Dad snapping at me as a child whenever Id waste food, telling me I can make something else if I dont wanna eat what my mom made (texture issues), getting mad at me for actually trying to make food for myself, and then later getting upset at me for staying up late to sneak and hoard snacks in my room
This is parental abuse and ableism.
You deserve access to food you can eat without discomfort or shame.
'Oh, you didn't finish x food? No other food until you finish it then!'
This, in fact, could last days.
This is parental abuse.
You don’t deserve to be deprived of food, and you should never be forced to eat something you don’t want.
i dont know if this is technically abuse (ive got mixed feelings about calling it that) but likely neglect and/or toxic parent. apologies for the long ask but i just feel like i have to explain myself
my family has always been kind of dysfunctional. a lot of it is because we're all flavors of neurodivergent that tend to chafe against each other, and this was really bad when my twin brother and i were little kids. i was parentified a lot because my brother is very visibly autistic and a bit psychologically delayed (about 2-3 years behind mentally/emotionally where he should be despite being very smart) and so i was always sort of his "keeper." this led to me being pushed to the side and my own autism and severe anxiety being ignored until i had a big meltdown when i began middle school upon realizing im trans which ended up getting me diagnosed with anxiety
my parents dont live together (not divorced, not surrogate, but a secret third extra complicated thing that would for sure out me if i explained) and i lived with my dad as my primary caretaker. this led to my weekend visits with my mom being seen as a sort of "escape" from all the crap i was dealing with at school and the emotional issues i was having with my dad from all of my undiagnosed bs and his own behavior
all this context to say: im just starting university now and i live off campus with my mom because she lives by the university im going to and due to my autism and separation/social anxiety we figured living on campus wouldn't be feasible for me. well ive been having a lot of issues related to my schooling and my physical health, a lot due autistic burnout and some due to an undiagnosed thing going on with my joints and my immune doctors arent really interested in figuring out. but this has caused me to really dread classes and get sick a lot. that combined with my upcoming top surgery has really put a lot of stress on me which obviously doesnt help
my dads been really great with it all. ever since he started seeing a therapist, i started going to therapy as well, and both of us starting the right medicine for us our relationship has gotten really strong and hes been doing a lot better. he still pushes a little too far sometimes but he listens if i tell him hes pushing a line i need respected.
my mom however has just been... not great. shes not awful, but she just doesnt really listen to me and sort of brushes over my issues and any boundaries i set. she did this somewhat when i was a kid as well but not to this extent? i guess just since i didnt live with her. but like, when im feeling unwell unless its extreme shes like "well you just got to tough it out, pushing through this kind of thing is good for you" even though its just been making me feel worse physically and mentally. and i know i dont "need" her approval as an adult but again, major anxiety disorders. shes been really skeptical about some of the medicine ive been switched onto as well, specifically my meds for my intense chronic insomnia (something ive been dealing with for about 6 years now with nothing working) because she doesnt want me taking "sleeping pills" or anything with a sedative effect, even though this is the only thing thats ever worked for me.
not to mention sometimes i just need to complain about stuff, especially schooling and socializing with how hard its been for me recently when its never been something ive really struggled with before, and she always has an opinion on it (usually contradictory to mine/what i need in that moment.) and this like. really upsets me? unwanted/unsolicited opinions on close emotional topics has always really triggered my anxiety and made me upset and its something i ask people not do. so when i asked my mom if she could just listen to me and if i want her opinion ill ask her she responded "well i have a right to participate in a conversation im a part of" and i just sighed and said whatever. so now ive just not been talking to her about this sort of thing cus honestly there doesnt feel like a point. and its been really compounding with my social isolation and my anxiety from being away from my brother and dad. i just wish id never started university honestly. its hard to see the good its brought me (like being able to get diagnosed properly, finding what career i want to do, adopting my cat who i love and adore) when it just feels like everything has been going wrong and nothings been working in my favor.
sorry again for the long ask just.. felt like i needed to give context for everything
This is parental abuse.
Neurodivergence and other issues do not excuse your mother’s inability to respect what you need once it’s been clearly communicated to her. You deserve to set boundaries and have that respected. You deserve a parent who cares for you and your well-being and is interested in improving rather than defending their behaviour. I hope you can find a path forward.
