Feeding a parking meter is the city's latest way to provide food and shelter to Calgary's needy.

A new fundraiser, dubbed Calgary's Road Home, features 10 refurbished coin-slot parking meters to collect spare change for the food bank and Calgary Homeless Foundation.

The Calgary Parking Authoritysponsored fundraiser is also collecting donations using curbside ParkPlus pay machines and parking cellphone accounts.

All of the donations go directly to the food bank and homeless foundation to provide meals, housing and other programs.

The refurbished parking meters, which accept all coins, already dot Stephen Avenue and are in front of City Hall.

In all, there will be 20 meters temporarily installed. They can be purchased for a donation of $1,000. Two have been supported by local businesses to collect even more donations.
